Dhoni began his cricketing career playing for the Bihar cricket team, and later for the Indian Cricket team. He made his debut for the Indian team in December 2004 in an ODI match against Bangladesh. He quickly established himself as one of the best finishers in limited-overs cricket, and was known for his aggressive captaincy and his cool and calm demeanor under pressure.

In 2007, he led the Indian team to victory in the ICC World Twenty20, becoming the first captain from Asia to win the tournament. He also led the team to victory in the 2010 Asia Cup and the 2010 and 2016 Asia Cups. He is also the only captain in history to have won all three ICC trophies (World Cup, World Twenty20, and Champions Trophy).

In 2008, he was appointed as the captain of the Indian Test cricket team and in 2010 he become the captain of Indian ODI team as well. He led India to the number one position in the ICC Test rankings for the first time and also led India to the top of the test rankings in 2010.

Dhoni announced his retirement from Test cricket in December 2014 and stepped down as the ODI and T20I captain in January 2017. He retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. He is widely considered as one of the greatest cricketers of all time, and one of the best captains in the history of the game.
