Looking Back: Old & New 'Star Wars' Games

Past and present: Take a look at the 'Star Wars' games that we have been playing.

Over the years there have been many games that have been released on PC and console-based on Star Wars, with some really hitting the market, but others somewhat falling flat. So what were some of the hits? And where were the missteps?

Star Wars Battlefront II (2017)

The newer Battlefront we’re talking about here. It had a slow start, but with the gradual addition of more and more free DLC content through updates, EA and Vice’s Battlefront II is a game that is getting better and better. In the next update, they’ll be adding in playable droidekas. Whilst the game does have an entertaining-if-short campaign mode in which you take control of Inferno Squad’s Iden Versio, the most fun is to be had on Battlefront’s many online game modes, such as Galactic Assault, Hero Showdown, Blast and the novel Ewok Hunt (where you either take control of Stormtroopers awaiting extraction on Endor or the Ewoks hunting them). This game, if you want to give it a go, is still available at all good games vendors; and through sites like Discount Promo Codes, you can make savings from places such as Argos and 365 Games, getting the games you want for less.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan

Released exclusively on Xbox in 2001, it’s easy to see how this game passed many people by. The story is set just before and during Episode I: The Phantom Menace. With a game of Episode I being released in 1999 on PC and Playstation, this was the only chance to play the story of the first film in the prequel trilogy on the Xbox. In this one you play exclusively as Obi-Wan Kenobi, which means you have consistency, but not even being able to switch characters for a level or two means you probably hear his catchphrases too often. The story itself is interesting enough, and the lightsaber and force controls are more advanced than the games that preceded it and even some that followed. However, the graphics on this game does let it down visually. One bonus of the game are the battle arena levels—where you can defeat the likes of Mace Windu and Plo Koon—and the battle royale finale—where you take part in a multi jedi-on-jedi free-for-all.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

This game introduced a whole load of fans to the world of the Old Republic, basically the prequel to the prequels. Set around 4,000 years before the events of the main Star Wars saga, this story follows the journey of a Jedi as he makes his way in a world where Darth Malak, a Dark Lord of the Sith, unleashes an attack on the Republic with a Sith armada. This story gave a whole new depth to the history of the Jedi and the Sith, and was so popular that it spawned a direct sequel and a spin-off MMORPG. Since the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm, these games have now been deemed non-canon, but The Knights of the Old Republic may return in one form or another, with a film adaptation being considered.

LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game

Where would an article like this be without a brief mention of a LEGO video game? The 2005 released by Traveller’s Tales complete changed the face of LEGO-based gaming, introducing a format that has been successfully replicated over many different, big name titles such as Batman, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings. A fun-if-unchallenging adventure, this game is great to play when you just want to switch off your brain and lose yourself in the world of a galaxy far, far away.
