Jirachi, The Pokemon Wishmaster and Its Pokemon Team

A Pokemon team built for Black Friday

We are now officially into the same week as Thanksgiving meaning the holidays are set to begin in mere days. I wanted to make a Black Friday team but felt that it would not be the same in the Pokemon world. This might be my many, many years in retail making me bitter toward the day but I do feel that it wouldn't be the day of sales and madness it is in our world.

The holidays are the time when we do a lot of wishing, whether it is for objects, love, belonging, family, etc. Black Friday in the Pokemon World would be when Jirachi would visit those who need an intervention. I see it acting as Ghost of Christmas Past, Ghost of Christmas Present, and Ghost of Christmas Future all in one.

As always, before we get into the article I do have some disclaimers:

  1. This team is meant to be an in-game team and not designed to be competitively viable.
  2. I normally do not use legendaries or mythical Pokemon on teams but will use Jirachi and no others on this team.
  3. To help use Pokemon from as many different generations I have limited my selections to a maximum of one per generation.
  4. This list will be the Pokemon on the team only, no moves, natures, abilities or items will be mentioned.
  5. This list is meant to be a theme with my selections being based on said theme.

Also before we get into the Black Friday team I do have teams themed for Halloween & Thanksgiving:

Now that is out of the way let's get to the Black Friday team!

The main core of Jirachi's team will be Pokemon that represent objects and things that once made the people it helps happy. The majority of these will be Ghost-type Pokemon, not to be morbid but to symbolize the fact that they are lost or forgotten.

The first Pokemon on the team is Drifblim, the balloon that brought us joy before it floated away or popped. Due to its shape and friendly appearance, Drifblim is often used by Jirachi in its interactions with children along with the next entry.

Next is Mimikyu, the second of the three Ghost-type Pokemon and the other Pokemon Jirachi uses when it has to help a child.

I did debate putting Banette in this spot, but Mimikyu reminds me of the simple hand puppets and stuffed animals often given at baby showers. Its secondary Fairy-type also helps prevent it from bringing another Dark-type weakness onto the team.

The final Ghost-type for this team and the first Hisuian form to appear on any of my lists is Hisuian Zoroark, the Normal-Ghost counterpart of Gen 5's Zoroark.

Zoroark and the next entry represent the childhood pets we often remember and miss, even as adults. Zoroark is the stand-in for the childhood dogs many of us had and lost. Its Normal-type gives it an immunity to Ghost which helps balance the team's types.

The second member of the childhood pet duo is Umbreon, the Dark embodiment of the cat many of us had growing up.

Umbreon has always struck me as feline and is one of my favorite Dark-type Pokemon. Its typing helps control the team's weakness to Ghost and brings strong defense to the team.

Unfortunately not every soul can be saved, even with the best efforts of those with the best intentions some may not be swayed from the path they are on. This is where Grimmsnarl comes in, Jirachi's no-nonsense, no second-guessing orders muscle.

Jirachi's final Pokemon is Grimmsnarl, the Pokemon world's equivalent to our world's Krampus. Grimmsnarl is sent to collect and punish those Jirachi deems to be unsavable, while a rare occurrence it is enough to scare the children of the Pokemon World into behaving.

Jirachi became the centerpiece to the Black Friday team early in development. The Pokemon that is able to grant wishes would be the Pokemon that people would naturally associate with the day in our world that many things we covet are purchased for us.

But as I said in the intro I see Black Friday being different in the Pokemon World, it would be the day that Jirachi seeks out those whose wishes it heard that need its help. Instead of a day of blatant materialism, the day after we give thanks for what we have would be a day for those who have lost their way to be saved.
