Is Scott Cawthon's Involvement Really What's Best for the 'Five Nights at Freddy's' Film?

Five Nights at Freddy's has become one of the biggest examples of how big indie game developers can make it and how far pure fandom can take a property. For awhile now there have been rumors swirling about FNAF receiving the testimony for its success with a live action movie in the works.

Creator Scott Cawthon has been heralded as a genius storyteller who invokes fear in anyone who plays his games. However, it seems that all of the momentum that was built up with Warner Bros. and New Line Cinemas - the original production team - broke down from a statement released on Steam:

I know that I promised some movie news by the end of the month, so here it is. However, keep in mind that there are still some very important discussions in progress, so the amount of information that I can share is extremely limited. In fact, even the information that I can share will have to remain somewhat cryptic. The reality is that last year the FNaF movie was met with several delays and roadblocks, some involving problems within the movie industry as a whole. As a result, as of right now, the movie is back at square one. However, depending on your point of view, that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's bad because the movie is in its early stages again (so don't expect a trailer anytime soon), but it's good because I want to make sure that the right movie gets made, and things are on track right now for that to happenI'm also going to be involved with the movie from day one this time, and that's something extremely important to me. I want this movie to be something that I'm excited for the fanbase to see.So there you have it. I know that this news might come as a disappointment to some, but there are going to be a lot of great things happening in 2017! :)

If you read between the lines you start to get the picture that the film may have broken down due to Cawthon's lack of involvement in the film. This is understandable, what creator wouldn't want to remain active with anything their property is involved with? Thankfully it looks like Scott found Freddy and his friends a new home with Blum House.

Blum House has been on the rise with #horror films with Split and Get Out raking in huge amounts of money and critical acclaim. If the FNAF movie was going to get picked up by anyone then Blum House was the best spot you could hope to land. They're is sure to keep Scott and his ideas close when writing the script and through the whole development process. What if that's not great news for fans though?

Don't get me wrong, without Cawthon we wouldn't have FNAF and he did a great job at setting up all the lore and mystery behind the games, but does anyone really know what the actual story is?

Many Youtubers and game aficionado's have taken their best guesses but still the whole FNAF community searches for a definitive answer. While this mystery has kept the fan base alive and thriving you have to wonder if this same type of strategy would be best for a live action film that's going to more then likely attempt to adhere to an audience outside the FNAF fanbase.

We all know that movie adaptations of #videogames have been struggling for years and FNAF can easily fall into this same slump, but with Blum House behind the production it has the chance to break this. However, if Cawthon insists on making the movie just as cryptic as the games are then they might run the risk of alienating casual moviegoers and possibly frustrating die hard fans searching for answers.

While there is no way of knowing what Cawthon or Blum House's intentions are with the story, I hope they find a way to give it a unique twist from the games. While I'm sure there will be a vague ending like with many #horror films, I hope we at least have a somewhat decent understanding of the whole story once we see the finished product.

All that being said I hope that they find a way to intrigue both fans and new comers to the franchise with the same mystery and fears that brought the game to this point. I just hope they find a way to successfully adapt the games story to film and I think with Blum House leading the way we'll get that.
