India has a rich and diverse sports culture, which has been a significant part of the country's history, tradition, culture, finance, and entertainment. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is the dedicated ministry of the Government of India for sports in the country, and it is run by a Secretary to the Government of India, usually headed by a Minister of State. The sports ministry recognizes a National Sports Federation Of India (NSFOI) for each Olympic and non-Olympic sport, except for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which is not an NSFOI. As of 2019, the ministry recognized 56 NSFs, with the exception of the BCCI. The presence of politicians at the helm of many such federations has been criticized for causing inefficiency and corruption.

For each sport, India has a separate national sports governing body, which regulates and promotes the sport in the country. These include the All India Football Federation for football, the National Rifle Association of India for shooting sports, the Boxing Federation of India for boxing, and many more. The Sports Authority of India, which is the field arm of the ministry, supports and nurtures talent in youth, providing them with the requisite infrastructure, equipment, hostels, diet, training-coaching facilities, and competition exposure.

Cricket is the most popular spectator sport in the country, generating the highest television viewership, and featuring full-capacity audiences in stadiums during international and Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. It is part of popular culture, and citizens often play it as a recreational activity. However, in recent decades, football has also become another popular sport in terms of broadcast viewership and stadium audience attendance.

The 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) is the ongoing 16th season of the franchise Twenty20 cricket league in India, owned and operated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The league returned to its original home and away-format after a period of four years, during which the previous three seasons were held at neutral venues due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Fan parks" are being organized in 45 cities, events last occurred in 2019, and an opening ceremony took place for the first time since the pandemic with performances from Arijit Singh, Tamanna Bhatia, and Rashmika Mandanna. The same ten teams from the previous season have returned with a few changes to the team personnel. The league stage will be played across 12 venues in India, while the playoffs phase of the schedule is yet to be announced.

The Assam Cricket Association Stadium, Guwahati, will be making its IPL debut and will host the first two Rajasthan Royals home games before they play their remaining five home games at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, while Dharamsala will be making its return to IPL after ten years and will host the final two Punjab Kings home games after they play their first five home games at Mohali. The other eight teams will be playing all their home games at their traditional home grounds. The home stadiums of all IPL teams are Ahmedabad, Mohali, Lucknow, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Mumbai. Guwahati and Dharamshala are the two new venues added in IPL 2023.

In June 2022, the broadcasting rights for the league between 2023 and 2027 were sold for ₹48,390 crores (US$6.1 billion), establishing the league as the second most expensive tournament in the world after the National Football League, overtaking the English Premier League. Star Sports renewed its television contract, and Viacom18 acquired exclusive streaming rights within India. Matches will be streamed on the JioCinema mobile.
