How to Choose the Best Gaming Monitor in 2023

Most desktop screens today are between 21 and 27 inches. Any smaller screen is reserved for laptops and monitors that trade size for touchscreens. Monitors larger than 27 inches are primarily designed to display resolutions greater than 1080p.

For 1080p screens, diagonals of 21-24 inches are preferred. This is also the very best size range for 1080p, as anything larger will lead to easily-distinguishable pixels when the screen is looked at up close. There is always aliasing.

To have an optimal viewing experience, and avoid eye fatigue, you'll need to be as far away from the screen as possible.

The most comfortable viewing distance for most people is approximately proportional to the diagonal of their monitor. For example, if your monitor measures 24 inches, your eyes should be between 24-48 inches and the screen. If you have any eye problems such as the one mentioned above, you may want to be a bit farther from the screen.

The Best Gaming Monitor Size

We have categorized the following guidelines according to display resolutions. Take a look at each option to determine the best size gaming monitor for you setup.

The Best 1080p Monitor Size

Gaming at 1080p resolution is the norm in 2020. They are widely available and offer sharp graphics. You don't have to spend a lot to get the right setup, which is great for double-screen gaming.

You should stick to a small screen size or you risk blurred images or pixelated graphics. You can go as high or low as you like, but we recommend sticking to 22"-24" for the best 1080p monitor size. This will give you between 91 to 103 PPI, which is plenty of eye candy for most modern titles.

Best 1440p Monitor Size

It is possible to find the ideal size screen for gaming in the area between HD and 4K. Also known as 1440p, QHD or HD. This screen combines the best of both to deliver stunning graphics at a low price. For remarkably high refresh rates, 1440p monitors come with either G-Sync or FreeSync tech.

There are many options available, but we recommend a 27-inch or 28-inch display to get the best PPI.

The Best 4K Monitor Size

4K screens offer unparalleled immersion if you are a serious resolution fan. These screens deliver approximately 8 million pixels at an insanely high PPI. You'll have pixel-perfect clarity regardless of whether you play on PC or console.

A 30" monitor will give you an unparalleled 4K experience that will leave you stunned if you are determined to move forward. It's the largest screen size available for video gaming, at 30 inches.

Best Ultrawide Monitor Size

The monitors mentioned above have a 16-to-9 aspect ratio. However, there are other types of screens on the market. The ultrawide screen is the most popular.

Ultrawide displays feature screens with wider horizontal widths. These displays can display different aspect ratios (e.g. 21:9), which affects how their resolution is displayed on the screen. We have listed the top resolutions and sizes below.

As you search for the perfect fit, keep in mind that ultrawide displays can be found with curved screens. This curvature compensates for screen distortion on ultrawide displays and gives the image a sharper appearance. This is a great benefit for gamers.

However, a 24-inch monitor is the best for most people who will be sitting at a desk. Although larger monitors allow you to enjoy higher resolutions, they can be uncomfortable for those who are used to being close to them or have smaller desks.

Finally, if your display is larger than 30 inches we recommend a TV. You won't be able to see the screen as close up and TVs offer better multimedia quality. However, make sure you get a TV with a fast response time and a "videogame mode" that minimizes input lag.
