I was recently having a conversation with my mother when she stated that she was concerned that I was spending too much money on gaming. I informed her that some of the games I play are free to play.

She was confused because she didn't understand how a game developer could possibly make money from a free-to-play game. When I explained this to her, she was relieved.

This conversation inspired me to write about and educate people who might be new to gaming to help them understand why the free-to-play genre is actually a wise business practice and how it can actually be more profitable.

What is a free-to-play game?

A free-to-play (F2P) game is a type of video game that can be downloaded and played without a cost.

F2P games are available on a wide range of platforms, including mobile devices, PC, and consoles, and they can be found in a variety of genres, including action, strategy, adventure, and simulation.

How do free-to-play game developers make money?

Free-to-play game developers make money through various methods, the most common of which are in-app purchases and advertising.

In-App Purchases

These are purchases made within the game for virtual goods or currency, such as extra lives, power-ups, weapons, or cosmetic items. These microtransactions allow players to progress faster or gain an advantage in the game, and they generate significant revenue for the developers.

This can include regular in-app purchases or even battle passes.

For example, in Fortnite, players can purchase in-game currency to buy cosmetics for the character they play with, such as the following:

  • Character Skins
  • Character Costumes
  • Glider Skins
  • Limited Edition Characters

Advertising

Some free-to-play games display advertisements to players, either as banners on the screen or as video ads that play before or during gameplay. The game developers earn money when an ad is displayed or clicked on.

This is most common in mobile games but can be seen in a few console or PC games.

The only PC game that comes to mind that I play is Trackmania, which advertises things like movies currently in theatres on the in-game billboards.

Subscriptions

Some free-to-play games allow players to buy subscription services, providing access to additional content, characters, or other features. Subscription-based models are also another way to generate a steady revenue stream for developers.

Sponsorships and Licensing

Game developers can also generate revenue by partnering with brands or companies to include sponsored content in their games or by licensing their games to other companies for use in other products or services.

For example, Fortnite regularly teams up with various other developers and brands to bring exciting cosmetics and characters into the game, such as Spider-Man and Dragonball Z.

Paid DLCs (downloadable content)

Developers can also provide additional content to the game for a price, this includes new maps, characters, weapons, etc.

The biggest example of this is Destiny 2, which on the surface, is a free-to-play game, but if the player would like to get more out of the game, they would have to purchase a DLC to play through additional content.

It’s important to note that, for a free-to-play game to be successful, it needs to have a large player base and offer a balanced and fair gameplay experience, regardless of whether a player makes in-app purchases or not.

Why have free-to-play games become more common in recent years?

Free-to-play games have become more common for a few reasons:

Increased Reach and Accessibility

The rise of mobile gaming, along with the increasing popularity of app stores, has made it easier for developers to distribute their games to a wide audience. F2P games can be downloaded and played by anyone with a smartphone or tablet, regardless of their budget or financial situation.

Lower Barrier to Entry

F2P games have a low barrier to entry, as they can be downloaded and played for free. This makes it more likely that players will try out a game, which increases the potential player base.

Microtransactions

With the introduction of microtransactions, developers have found a new revenue stream that can support the development and maintenance of their games. Players can purchase virtual goods, such as extra lives, power-ups, weapons, or cosmetic items, which generates significant revenue for the developers.

The Rise of Casual Gaming

As the gaming industry has grown, the player base has broadened to include casual players who may not want to spend a lot of money on games. F2P games cater to this market by offering an accessible and low-cost way to play.

Advertising

Another way for F2P game developers to make money is through advertising. F2P games can display ads in-game, which can help generate revenue for the developers,

Social Aspect of the Game

Free-to-play games also allow players to play with friends or people they don’t know, and this increases the social aspect of the game.

Overall, F2P games have become more common because they offer developers a new way to monetize their games while providing a low-cost and accessible form of entertainment for players.

Summary

A free-to-play game is a type of video game that can be downloaded and played without a cost.

Developers make money through various methods such as in-app purchases, advertising, subscriptions, sponsorships and licensing, paid DLCs, etc.

The popularity of free-to-play games has increased in recent years due to increased reach and accessibility, such as the rise of mobile gaming and a lower barrier to entry as they are free to download and play.

For a free-to-play game to be successful, it needs to have a large player base and offer a balanced and fair gameplay experience, regardless of whether a player makes in-app purchases or not.
