Dragon Equipment Sets - Dungeons and Dragons 5E

Whether you are a DM looking for the perfect rewards that you can sprinkle for your characters throughout your campaign, or a player looking for the perfect dragon themed equipment set for your character, this series has what you need. Each article will focus on one class of armor (light, medium, and heavy) and a weapon created from the parts of a single type of dragon.

While these work well as a set, none require the rest of the set to be great items. This set was conceived with a particular theme in mind, but feel free to mix and match with other items to make a set all your own.

Black Dragon Light Armor and Bow

Whether they are just looking to be a better thief or they are looking to rain death from the shadows, roguish types of all stripes find the many tools created from the corpses of the Black Dragons to be invaluable. One of these magical items is boon enough, but woe be to the prey of an assassin who has acquired the entire set.

Circlet of The Assassin

While this circlet can be made of any metal, it is always adorned with the teeth of a juvenile Black Dragon.

While wearing the circlet, you deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll. The attack must be a ranged weapon attack. This damage stacks with sneak attack damage if applicable.

Black Dragon Armor of Shadows

Thanks to the naturally dark leather tanned from black dragon hide, this armor studded with black dragon knuckle bones is the perfect choice for anyone who wishes to remain out of sight.

While wearing this armor you have resistance to Acid damage. Also while wearing this armor you can use the Hide action as a bonus action on your turn. You may attempt to hide in darkness even if you are only lightly obscured by it. When you successfully hide in darkness you magically meld with that darkness and remain hidden as long as you do not take any other action. You can only be revealed through magical means.

Wyrm-Tongue Gloves

Made from the tongues of black dragons, these gloves infuse the wearer's attacks with venom.

While wearing these gloves, when you score a critical hit with a weapon attack, you can use your reaction. If you do the target is poisoned for 1d4 rounds and must make a constitution saving throw or be blinded or deafened (your choice) while they are poisoned.

Shadow Step Boots

All black dragons know that retreat is preferable to death, and the wise thief understands that as well. These boots, made from the tanned hide of a black dragon’s wings allow him to make better use of that wisdom.

When you are in dim light or darkness, as a bonus action you can teleport up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space you can see that is also in dim light or darkness.

Caustic Sting

Crafted from the clavicle bone of a Black Dragon Wyrmling, this bow harnesses the destructive power of dragons generally, and the corrosive blood of the Black Dragon.

You gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. All weapon attacks made with this bow deal acid damage.

You can speak the bow’s command word as an action to cast Melf’s Acid Arrow with it. When you make the spell's attack, you do so with the same attack bonus as a weapon attack with this bow.

The bow can't be used this way again until the next dawn.

This set was designed primarily for a stealthy and deadly playstyle in mind. The sharpshooting archer, firing crippling and often deadly arrows from the shadows would benefit the most from this set, but any stealthy or DPS playstyle can benefit from some or all of these pieces.
