Embracing a traditional format, they really have stood the test of time, and in 2020 there’s a host of different board games available to suit everyone from general knowledge geeks to too-cool-for-school movie fans.

As thoroughly enjoyable as they are to play, board games also have their downsides, the most obvious being that you need tabletop or floor space to play them.

Secondly, most board games are designed with a minimum of two players in mind, so if you don’t have friends and flatmates, who are as enthusiastic about playing games as you then you won’t be able to play – believe us, trying to play Scrabble alone is nowhere near as fun!

What to do, then, if you’re the only gaming enthusiast in your social circle? The answer is to go online. Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, some of the most popular classic board games can be played on your phone and laptop, here’s the lowdown on four of the best.

Monopoly

At the grand old age of 85, Hasbro’s long-running board game is available to play in hundreds of different editions, including a free-to-play online game and mobile gaming app. As anyone familiar with the game knows, it can take a lot longer than the recommended 60 minutes to complete a round, but this digital edition includes a special quick mode if you’re pressed for time.

With different multi-player options available too, including an offline mode for playing with friends at home, an open mode to connect with other players around the world, and a single-player mode, there’s something here for everyone.

Risk

Widely considered as the ultimate strategy game, Risk has kept us engaged in territorial warfare since the late 1950s and global domination is now possible online with the Digital edition of Hasbro’s classic game. RISK: Global Domination takes everything we know and love about the original game and makes it available in an online format.

There are multiple player modes available, from single player to the Automatch mode, and an extended universe of over 50 more maps and 10 additional player scenarios.

Clue

Clue is a muder-mystery game that through the years has been made into a film, a TV show and even a Broadway musical. More recently it has also been made into an app version, which so far is only available for iOS. The app allows you and your friends to take on the different classic characters—Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlett, Professor Plum to find the killer.

Blackjack

Blackjack is one of the oldest games still played in the casino, dating back to the 1600s. In 2020, it’s also one of the most popular digital games in the iGaming industry, with around 14,000 online blackjack sites in operation today, each offering many variations on the game. At its heart, online blackjack follows the same rules as the traditional card game, and playing it online is a great place for beginners to start and improve their skills.

Backgammon

Backgammon is said to be the most popular online-game. The game itself is said to have been played for 5,000 years. If the multitude of players, on the myriad electronic platforms are any indication, the game may well be popular for another 5000 years into the future.

Mahjong

Definitely the oldest game on this list - it was reportedly first played in Qing Dynasty China – Mahjong is now enjoying a new lease of life as an online game.

Involving 144 different tiles which are played ‘dominoes-style’, Mahjong has long been as much a social game as it is competitive, so it’s available to play online in several multi-player formats. If it’s a game you’ve never tried before, however, Mahjong solitaire games are also available to play online.
