Blizzard Has Made Some Tweaks to Competitive Play in Overwatch 2

But today, let’s dive into the juicy details of Overwatch 2’s competitive mode. We’re gonna chat about all the upgrades they’re making to the ranking and matchmaking system, so get ready for some epic changes!

Why is Overwatch 2’s ranked mode so popular?

First off, the competition! Ranked mode brings out the competitive spirit in gamers like nothing else. Everyone wants to climb the ladder, show off their skills, and be recognized as the top dog.

It’s a chance to prove yourself and flex your gaming muscles. People love the challenge, the intensity, and the adrenaline rush that comes with every match.

But it’s not just the competition that makes Overwatch 2’s ranked mode so popular. It’s also the sense of progression. Every game you play, every win you earn, and every skill rating point you gain brings you closer to that next rank or division. It’s addictive, man!

You start from the bottom, and with every victory, you feel like you’re climbing the ladder of success. It’s like a virtual representation of personal growth, and that feeling of improvement keeps players hooked.

Finally, Overwatch 2’s ranked mode is just plain fun. The game is designed to be enjoyable and ranked mode cranks up the excitement to eleven. It’s a chaotic symphony of heroes, abilities, and strategies. Every match is unique, and you never know what’s going to happen next. It keeps you hooked, addicted, and coming back for more.

What are these improvements coming to ranked?

In a recent blog post, Blizzard shared some improvements they’re making to competitive play. One interesting change is how they match up friends with different skill levels who want to play together.

They’re also prioritizing placing groups with varying skill ranges in the same match to ensure fairness, even though it may slightly increase queue times for larger groups.

Season 5 brings back the fan-favorite Competitive Mystery Heroes mode, where team compositions and maps are randomized. A lot of people were disappointed when it was removed, so this is a nice gesture during these tough times.

Blizzard also dives into how skill ratings are calculated. The three key factors in adjusting your matchmaking rating (MMR) are: comparing your skill rating to your opponents’, considering how new you are to Overwatch, and looking at how frequently you play the specific Competitive mode.

These factors are pretty straightforward, but the second one explains why new players might experience some fluctuation in their skill tier before stabilizing.

The third factor is interesting because it means you have to play regularly, or the game will be uncertain about your skill level and make bigger adjustments when you return.

However, there’s a downside to not playing frequently. The game becomes unsure about your skill level, which unintentionally caused more players to end up in Bronze.

Blizzard acknowledges this issue and promises to make adjustments to allow more players to climb out of Bronze. They’ll closely monitor the effects, so if you’re stuck there, you can blame Blizzard.

A new addition to competitive play is team queue. You can now form a group of five players with no restrictions on rank combinations. The teams will be locked to one tank, two damage, and two support heroes. This new mode will have a separate skill rating and will launch on July 11.

Final Words

Clearly, competitive play is where the action is, judging by Blizzard’s recent focus.

One interesting comment from the game’s director is that Overwatch matches sometimes turn into one-sided “stomps” because that’s just how things go sometimes.

The game needs to make this new direction work, as it’s probably facing its toughest month ever.
