This has to be some sort of a record. A tabletop game based on the Mignola’s Hellboy comic series called Hellboy: The Board Game has smashed its crowdfunding goal in just 48 hours and has already raised over $1 million. And, check out that artwork!

The campaign reached its funding goal in just 18 minutes and has gone on to raise over $1 million.

Designed by James M. Hewitt, the talent behind other such smash hits such as Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower, Necromunda: Underhive and DreadBall,Hellboy: The Board Game is a tabletop adventure played with an array of incredibly detailed miniatures that capture the unique Hellboy aesthetic of Mike Mignola’s fanciful work.

But what is it?

Hellboy: The Board Game is a cooperative game that is playable by up to four players. The concept drops the players into the shoes (or hooves) of an agent of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence (BPRD) as either Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, Johann Krauss or Hellboy himself.

Your mission? Hunt down and eliminate any paranormal, insidious, or sinister threat lurking in the shadows waiting to take control of the Earth.

It is a tile-based board where players progress by gathering clues and taking on monsters. The more clues you get the better prepared you are for the end bosses.

The game has players exploring vast eerie wastelands, gothic locations, and hellish sources of agony and pain whilst all the while forced to battle monstrous creatures and spectres of the occult and paranormal.

The company behind this incredible campaign is none other than Mantic Games, a renowned company within the sector known for their incredibly detailed and immersive tabletop creations — these games include The Walking Dead: All Out War Miniatures Game, Mars Attacks: The Miniatures Game, Dreadball, and many more.

The hugely experienced team, based in Nottingham, UK, have partnered with Dark Horse Comics, the publisher of Hellboy comics, to create this insatiable looking game.

This latest success with Hellboy: The Board Game, makes it Mantic’s 16th consecutive overachieving Kickstarter campaign.

Aside from the incredible concept, a big pull for backers and another possible reason for the immense success could be the return that pledgers get on the base back. At the time of publishing, the base back is $132 and in return pledges receive 108 miniature characters with multiple expansion miniatures included. That’s quite the incentive!

Hellboy: The Board Game sits amongst a plethora of other tabletop board games hitting Kickstarter this month. And, Hellboy: The Board Game surprisingly is not the biggest earner — it seems that the sector is really exploding right now.

Specifically, Rob Daviau’s (Risk Legacy) remake of the classic Fireball Island is currently, at the time of publishing, sitting on over $2 million. Additionally, a there is an official Street Fighter tabletop reboot game that has gained over $1.3 million.

If you want to look elsewhere in the horror genre, a brilliant looking romper-stomper of a zombie game comes in the form of Zombicide: Invader from developers, CMON. Zombicide: Invader sits on $2.2 million.

That is quite the collection with a lot of money invested. It is amazing to see the reception and to see the industry growing. Tabletop is an emerging market and one that I hope continues to gain traction. It is great to see that people have more and more options and more and more exciting opportunities to get into tabletop gaming outside of the Dungeons and Dragons universe.

The Hellboy: The Board Game campaign runs until May 25, so, plenty of time to get involved!
