Video games got their start in 1958 with a prototype of Pong, and since then they’ve come a very long way. As technology improves throughout time, so do the video games, and it’s exciting to see what developers are capable of. Continue reading to learn about some of the best video games of all time, in no particular order.

1. Super Mario Bros.

Who’d have thought the titular plumber from Brooklyn would become such an influence in the video game world? Mario jumped from the pipes of the Mushroom Kingdom in 1985’s Super Mario Bros. right into the hearts of gamers everywhere, young and old. While it is not his first video game appearance, it’s his first side scrolling adventure that catapulted him to worldwide stardom. Since its release, the game has set the standard for how video games should be.

2. The Entire Pokemon Series

Pokemon remains one of the most popular and successful franchises in gaming history. The thrill of catching and trading these virtual monsters among friends and strangers still resonates with young and old people alike. And with its innovations in technology, being closer to your Pokemon has never been easier! As to whether the first generation is truly the best of all eight, it’s debatable.

3. Super Mario Bros. 3

The acclaimed third installment in the series takes the standard that its predecessor set and establishes it further. It introduces many innovative features, such as an overworld map for navigation and new costumes for Mario like the magical petrifying Tanooki Suit. It’s an adventure that was ahead of its time at its 1988 release and continues to be so today.

4. Fallout 4

Most of the Fallout games are fantastic, but Fallout 4 can best be described as a masterpiece of epic proportions. Many will love its ever-expanding post-apocalyptic open-world setting and the varied, fascinating NPCs (non-playing characters), but the most satisfying has to be leveling up your character as you play. In the game, all music ranges from the 1920s to the 1950s, making it one of the most addicting soundtracks ever.

5. Grand Theft Auto V

The fifth chapter of the provocative Grand Theft Auto series has earned its place in the rankings of the best video games ever created. The intricate storyline, multi-dimensional characters, and open-world environment are among the many highlights to explore. Fewer things are as relaxing as stealing a car and getting into a shootout while “I Want It That Way” plays in the background. The city of Los Santos has many side missions and Easter eggs across the board, and you can even take it online to complete heists with your friends.

6. The Sims Games

The Sims has been a mainstay in computers and consoles everywhere for years, and the lovable Simlish-speaking denizens of the Simverse aren’t packing up shop soon. What makes The Sims so popular? After creating a Sim, the player can make their virtual character go to work, start a family, fight other Sims, and do whatever else comes to mind. You can even be a vampire and feed on unsuspecting Sims for power. And that’s not even the strangest part of the game—it’s one you have to play to believe.

7. Resident Evil 7

Resident Evil has established itself as one of the greatest horror video game franchises in history, and the 7th game is no different. Players must control a character whose wife is held hostage by a psychotic family in the middle of nowhere. Using whatever they can find as weapons, it’s a frightening ordeal when the evil patriarch is lurking at every corner.

It’s not a game you should play with the lights off unless you’re brave enough to withstand the terror. The world of video games is expanding and improving. These games are examples of astounding achievements in gaming and serve as a standard in their respective genres.
