As time passes, video games are becoming more and more advanced. There is a lot of good that comes from these advancements; games are more complex, vivid, and intricate than ever before. Console games offer controller support, high-definition graphics, and are now even becoming VR compatible. With that considered, we feel that there will always be a place for simplicity in the gaming industry. There are just some classic point and click adventures we miss, that make you think and strategize just as much as modern console games will while providing you with the old school vibe that we all love. Nonetheless, take a glance at some of our top rated point and click adventure games.

Many are wondering, what makes a great adventure game? The best adventure games encompass brilliant story lines, fan-favorite characters, challenging puzzles, and a sprinkle of comedy. If you want that answered in an example, then download Day of Tentacle. Made in 1993, Day of the Tentacle takes you on the adventure of three friends that plan to stop the malevolent Purple Tentacle from seizing control of the entire world. The player is given the power to travel time with the trinity of characters. Gamers investigate puzzles throughout different periods of history to ultimately aid their quest of overtaking the Purple Tentacle. The game is very well rounded and there is always something new to explore. What is a point and click game list without Monkey Island? The Secret of Monkey Island is a classic pirate game that takes place on the fictional Caribbean island of Melee. Guybrush Threepwood is the story's protagonist; he is a young man who is destined to become a pirate and will go through any obstacle to do just that. Monkey Island was glorified for its cutting-edge dialogue structure of that time. Not only do you have the ability to interact with whichever character that is desired, but the player is also given control over these interactions with the capability of choosing certain options for dialogue in conversation. Monkey Island was one of the first games to integrate that feature, giving the player more control over the protagonist's destiny. Lucasfilm Games are commended for their brilliant incorporation of humor, as well as their brain-challenging puzzles encompassed by lovable characters. For those who are entertained by fairy tales and folklore, we suggest you check out the King's Quest collection. Game designer Roberta Williams's inspiration for these games derived from her fascination of fictional books and fantasies. King's Quest follows the story line of the royal family Daventry, and the player vividly experiences protagonists' trials and tribulations of protecting the kingdom from harm's way. As one navigates through each chapter of the collection, the player is reliving stories told by elderly King Graham. These stories entail interconnected experiences of King Graham over different periods of time. The game involves experiences of valor, romance, and perseverance; each chapter adding a new piece to the story. This is a favorite for players who yearn for more than just gameplay, rather a whole story that will keep you hooked and eager to keep adding pieces to the puzzle.

Released in 1999, The Longest Journey is a point and click adventure game that will satisfy your sci-fi cravings with a unique, futuristic story line. The player takes control of the protagonist, April Ryan, an 18 year old visual-arts student. The game does a fine job of providing a foundation for the plot, as the player is gradually introduced to different facets of April's life. The player soon finds out that April lives in a reality containing two universes, the industrial universe Stark and the mystical universe Arcadia. April is known as a "Shifter," possessing the ability to navigate between both worlds. With these capabilities, the player is burdened with the responsibility of reinstating harmony between them. The unique plot of The Longest Journey allows the player to interact with characters that they wont forget, and solve a puzzle like no other.

Virgin Interactive Entertainment released Beneath a Steel Sky in 1994 and it has been a relevant point and click adventure game ever since. The game is best described as a cyberpunk sci-fi adventure game played from a third-person perspective. Beneath a Steel Sky takes place in a futuristic dystopia in which a catastrophe takes place on Earth, causing it to be extremely polluted. The new world is maltreated by tyrannical authorities, the Hobart Corporation and Union City. Beneath a Steel Sky's protagonist is a man named Robert Foster. Foster lived most of his life outside of the city, and returns as a fugitive to the authorities. Similar to other games on the list, the player navigates through the dystopia and interacts with characters and objects to gain information towards solving the puzzle. Beneath a Steel Sky is definitely a challenging "thinker" for gamers, providing you with weeks or months of gameplay. The game also has a sequel, Beneath a Steel Sky 2, as well as a remastered version for mobile devices. Thus, it would be smart to invest into the game as it will provide you with endless fun.

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars is a point and click adventure game with a more serious undertone than other games on this list. The player is introduced to main character George Stobbart, an American tourist, as he witnesses a terrible atrocity in Paris. Following the catastrophe, George meets a journalist on the scene named Nicole Collard. The player takes control of George and gathers information about the crime with Nicole as the two attempt to add pieces to the puzzle of the attack. Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars is highly regarded in the gaming industry; it has been nominated for multiple awards and won several. Many game developers have referred to Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars for inspiration because of its flawless game structure. Though the game has a somber tone, its developers do a great job of sprinkling humor, and a bit of romance, into the story. The player takes on a detective role, as George investigates objects and interacts with a myriad of characters to gain information. In conclusion, you can not go wrong by giving this game a play through; it is the total package you look for in a point and click adventure game.

Set in The Land of the Dead, Grim Fandago's foundation is based off Mexican folklore. The player takes control of Manny Calavera, a travel agent working for the Department of Death. Consistent with other employees of the Department of Death, Manny works to ramify arrears from past lives. Manny soon realizes that his reality is not exactly as it seems and your journey with the character entails a quest to make things right. Grim Fandango is a major fan favorite because of the glaring visuals, impressive sound effects and voice acting, as well as the Latin America-inspired environment. Lucas Arts are especially rewarded for their fine plot writing and development of their story lines and characters. Similar to most great point and click games, Grim Fandango is packed with puzzles that will keep you working at the game endlessly. Definitely give this game a look!

We felt we had to add an Indiana Jones game for all the fans out there. It also helps that Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is often regarded as one of the best point and click adventure games of all time. The game takes place in 1939, on the brink of World War II. The player is tasked with a global hunt to discover the city of Atlantis before the Nazis forcefully acquire the land and use it for war means. The game has received numerous awards for best adventure game of the year and sold over a million units. The player controls the protagonist, Indiana Jones, as he and his companion, Sophia Hapgood, conduct a thorough investigation in hopes of finding the submerged ancient city of Atlantis. Consistent with all Indiana Jones Story lines, the player gets to stop the antagonist, save the day, and get the girl. We highly suggest that you check this game out, as it is an all time point and click classic.

If you are a comic geek and enjoy games with fun story lines as well as humorous characters, then I suggest you take a glance at Sam & Max: Hit the Road. The two main characters, Sam & Max, are private detectives who travel the world solving cases and keeping people safe. The player takes control of Max as he and Sam attempt to get to the bottom of a case in which Bruno, a dangerous bigfoot, flees a carnival and is on the run, creating chaos in his wake. Similar to the developers of Monkey Island, LucasArts incorporates an advanced dialogue structure in which the player is given more control over Max's interactions with other characters. The game is often regarded as one of the best point and click adventures of all time because of its humor, music, characters, and voice acting. You will never get bored with this game, as they also included mini-games like Wak-A-Rat and Car Bomb for gamers to indulge. So strap in, pay close attention to detail, and enjoy Sam and Max's road trip pursuit!

Written, directed, and designed by Jane Jenson in 1993, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is the first game out of the Gabriel Knight Trilogy. Main character, Gabriel Knight, is an aspired writer and the owner of a unique book store. Gabriel is working on a new book that analyzes a myriad of Voodoo murders that have plagued New Orleans. Interestingly, this game is one of the first to base its fictional plot on real life events and tales. The player takes control of Gabriel Knight as he, his accomplice Grace Nakimura, Dr. John, and Detective Mosly uncover the association between the recent string of murders in New Orleans and the Voodoo Cult. The game rewards one's attention to detail and even provides the player with a tape recorder that allows Gabriel to playback any dialog that he previously had with characters in the past. Jane Jenson integrates spooky sound effects and a mysterious atmosphere to keep the player at the edge of his or her seat throughout gameplay.

In brief, these games are simply point and click adventures we miss, and feel that they can be a great offset to many of the modern console games in the industry.
