Introduction
The Star and Shadow is a wonderful inclusive multifunctional installation just out of the centre of Newcastle and you can read about it on their website here.
This is their mission statement.
Star and Shadow Cinema is a volunteer-run DIY space for Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, and the north east UK. It is set up as an open-to-join co-operative housed in a building it owns, dedicated to culture coming from and/or programmed by the grass roots - particularly cinema and music.
It occupies a similar universe to the John Marley Centre which you can check out here.
These are some press reviews of The Star and Shadow.
One Of The Events
My friend Krista invited me to an April Fair at the Star and Shadow and it gave me a chance to see her and give her a hug, and see some very interesting items and pictures.
Krista pointed out a lovely picture of her and Craig singing (I will add my tribute to this incredible human at the end of this piece).
Below is Krista's KOTA design page
The Fair had lots of interesting stalls and friendly people, and I could have come away with a lot of things but then thought where would I put them?
Nick The Bicycle Mechanic
This stall really caught my attention, with a lot of creations made from bicycle parts. I particularly liked the trees, but was unsure where I would put them.
I cannot find a web presence for Nick but his details are below.
Back To The Star And Shadow
The Star and Shadow is so many things which you can find out about in the website link. Their food is absolutely excellent and you can support the on the link below.
I usually have a drink or some cake but if you are lucky enough to be able to drop in you can enjoy some excellent cullinary treats.
The video I opened with is The Mush performing at The Star and Sjhadow five years back. I remember somebody sitting next to and vaping us into a sickly sweet cloud. If they had been smoking cannabis I would have been fine but I am not a fan of being vaped.
This was a commemorative gig to remember Craig Puranen Wilson / Sheena Revolta "Always a Star, Never A Shadow" who was very active in The Star and Shadow and the original location may have been the first place that I encountered Craig, but it also might have been the tyneside Cinema or the Central in Gateshead. We miss Craig every day.
A Little More Star And Shadow
The Star and Shadow is extremely inclusive in almost every way that you could possibly think of.
These are few, click on the link text to check them out:
RE-JIG SEWING & RECYCLING WORKSHOP
For lots of reusable options. Often volunteers will fix home devices for people for free. This also brings people together and makes them feel very included.
I think the name of this says it all, you could be on your way to becoming Bob Ross.
If you are a knitting needle afficianado this may be one for you to get tips, give tips, and create a masterpiece in wool.
NEWCASTLE FILM CLUB - SCRIPT READING WORKSHOP
If you have a script that you would like to workshop, you can send your short film script (10 pages or less) to [email protected] and we will try to read it and give you feedback as well.
