The Only Country In The World Named After A Woman

The names of Countries have amazing reasons to why they were allocated their names. To be present in the naming of a nation is to be part of history in the making. I would like to discuss the only country in the world named after a woman; Saint Lucia

I am continuously fascinated by countries worldwide, especially ones that are easily missed when scouting the earth. I find that these locations offer the most fruitful history, and the nation of Saint Lucia stands unique amongst all others with its unique name. Around the world, the United Nations recognises 195 sovereign states - 193 member states and 2 non-member observer states. Out of all 195, only one of them, Saint Lucia, is named after a woman. The country, sometimes known as Saint Lucie, is one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. French settlers were the first Europeans to discover the small island country and called it after them. Although certain regions, such as the Virgin Islands, are named after a woman or group of women, such as Saint Ursula and the 11,000 Virgins, Saint Lucia is the only sovereign state named after a woman.

How do Countries Get Their Names?

Countries have a vast range of names. Some are called after their location on a globe map, while others, like Iceland, are named after a geographical feature. Many countries in the region were called after the biggest tribes, such as Switzerland, named after the Schwyz. Similarly, certain countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Israel, Bolivia, and Saint Lucia, are named after people, despite their small numbers. On the other hand, Saint Lucia is the only country named after a woman, Saint Lucy of Syracuse.

What is St. Lucia

Map of St. Lucia

Saint Lucia, part of the Lesser Antilles, is an island republic in the Caribbean Sea's eastern portions. Barbados, Martinique, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are its closest neighbours to the southwest, north, and south, respectively. Saint Lucia is one of the world's smallest countries, with a total land area of approximately 238 square miles. Saint Lucia has a population of around 165,600 people, according to the 2010 census. Castries, the country's main city and capital, is home to approximately 35% of the country's population. The rest of the population is split between Vieux Fort, Gros Islet, and Soufriere, among other important towns.

Saint Lucia is a hilly volcanic island in the Caribbean. With a height of 3,120 feet above sea level, Mount Gimie is the highest point in the country. The Pitons, which are located between Choiseul and Soufriere on the western extremity of the island, are also the island's most recognised sight. Saint Lucia is also home to the world's first drive-in volcano, one of the most popular activities for visitors to the island's interior. The country also has a lot of lush rainforests.

British Influence

The Capture of St. Lucia, 1762

Being a member of the British Commonwealth, Saint Lucia is subject to the partial jurisdiction of Queen Elizabeth II. This British monarch also serves as the country's Head of State. The Governor-General of Saint Lucia, on the other hand, represents the Queen on the island. The Senate and the House of Assembly are the two houses of Saint Lucia's parliament. The prime minister of the country is the leader of the political party that supports the majority of members of the House of Assembly. The House of Assembly has 17 members elected for a five-year term, while the Senate has 11 nominees.

Living in a world where we see the cold hand of historic male patriarchy, it is great to see that some influence broke through. I would love to visit Saint Lucia. As I am an avid seeker of unusual and unique travel destinations, it would be great to see the only true 'motherland' on earth and learn the island's history. The Caribbean has always been on my bucket list, and now, knowing of St. Lucia, it has gone up the ranks. If you have ever visited the island, please do let us know!
