The Only Way A Jellyfish Will Die is if it's Killed

Immortality; a superpower that many wish to have. It is a common aspect of many Science fiction stories and goes against what we understand life to be on earth; Birth, Life, and Death are what we know. Well, this is not the case for Jellyfish.

The natural world is mind-boggling. Every animal on the planet must die at some point. Nothing in this universe is immortal; some creatures live for centuries, while others only survive for a few years or even a couple of days. It's the natural law that hasn't been broken in any case. Unless the jellyfish's biological death in the sea is identified, there is a being on this planet that simply won't die of natural causes; the Turritopsis Dorhnii.

Turritopsis Dorhnii?

This water creature differs from other sea creatures in that it has a heart and a brain. They lack a brain and a heart, yet their transparency enables them to see from one side to the other. The bell contracts in the shape of an umbrella aids in smooth movements while requiring less energy. One allows you to circulate the water while the other spins to suck it up conveniently. Jellyfish have a peculiar life that enables them to survive till they are killed. The beauty of jellyfish can be seen beneath the water's surface in the ocean and other locations. They're tiny, transparent fish that float around in the sea.

The contrast between the jellyfish and other unearthly and aquatic species can already be seen in its movement. It is already impossible for any living organism to exist without a heart. Jellyfish without a heart, on the other hand, become immortal. Another peculiar feature of this fish is that it can quickly transform its structure into polyps. After a few days, they take on a different shape. Unless they are hit or become prey to larger aquatic animals, they are eternal.

Why are they Immortal?

Because of their peculiar life cycle, jellyfish are said to be immortal. The larval stage from the polyps is the primary reason jellyfish never die. Turritopsis Dorhnii is a species that can live for a very long time. It's analogous to the butterfly's life cycle, in which it regenerates into a caterpillar before returning to adulthood. It begins its life as a caterpillar, which is formed from larvae. When it has reached maturity, it can transform into polyps at the right temperature. After the cyst-like structure of the medusa transition, the immature develops into stolons and polyps. They are biologically immortal as a result of this. Their appearance may alter as the cysts develop into adults, but they do not perish.

Is this the Case for all Jellyfish?

Except for the Turritopsis Dorhnii, no jellyfish lives indefinitely. Except for this species, which has shown to live without dying unless attacked by predators, no other jellyfish species has been identified. Even if you kill this aquatic species, it will continue to reproduce biologically by forming polyps. This is an example of a marine animal's incredible survival tendency, as it can live for decades and decades while undergoing biological modifications. It is the world's only animal that has demonstrated the power of immortality.

I guess all that is left to do is wait until some evil genius harvests the power of the jellyfish and brings humanity the power of immortality. Jokes aside, the jellyfish proves the power that nature can harvest if left alone. Human beings have mastered, well – in some cases, the power of knowledge, and thus, this has allowed us to shape the planet to serve us as a species best. Imagine if the only way a human could die was to be killed. Immortality is a powerful tool to have, and thankfully the Turritopsis Dorhnii is a carefree being that waddles across the oceans. What excites me the most is that our oceans have been barely explored, so who knows what else lay at the depths of our planet. One thing is for sure, as technology develops, so does our thirst for discovery.
