The Eiffel Tower was not intended to be in Paris

There are iconic monuments that take our breath away each time we see them. Some seem to have been part of the city for as long as we know, but what if I told you this was not always the case? There is no better example of this than the troubled history of the Eiffel tower.

Paris, the European city of love, is synonymous with romance, art, and the iconic Eiffel Tower. Standing tall and proud, this architectural marvel draws almost seven million visitors annually, consistently ranking among the top three most visited monuments worldwide. Yet, its journey to becoming the heart of the French capital is filled with twists and tales that few know about.

It's hard to envision the Parisian skyline without the Eiffel Tower's majestic silhouette. Still, what if this emblematic structure was never meant for Paris? The architect, Gustave Eiffel, initially approached Spain with a proposal to construct this grand metal edifice in Barcelona. Despite its innovative design, complete with an operational lift to the pinnacle, the Spanish authorities declined, leading to what might be considered today a 400-billion-euro oversight. To put this in perspective, the Eiffel Tower's value surpasses Rome's Colosseum, worth 91 billion euros, and even the Tower of London, estimated around 70 billion euros.

However, the Eiffel Tower's journey in Paris wasn't without its share of controversies. When introduced to the 1889 International Exposition, the Parisians were skeptical, with some even dubbing it a "metal asparagus." There was talk of dismantling the structure after its 20-year lease, and astonishingly, at one point, it was even offered for sale as scrap! Its salvation? The French army recognized its potential as a stellar communications tower.

Over the decades, the Eiffel Tower has not only survived but thrived, witnessing world events and evolving into Paris's jewel. By 2002, it had greeted its 200 millionth visitor, solidifying its status as the globe's most recognizable man-made edifice. Its maintenance is a feat in itself. The tower's paint weighs as much as ten elephants, and its evening illumination, a masterpiece by SETE - Société d’Exploitation de la tour Eiffel, is a sight to behold. And while the structure itself isn't copyrighted, the sparkling light show is, leading to some intriguing legal nuances for those attempting to replicate or capture its nightly brilliance.

So, when you next find yourself gazing up at an iconic monument, anywhere in the world, spare a moment to delve into its history. There's a wealth of tales and turns behind every brick and beam. As we reflect upon the past, we gain insights, fostering a deeper appreciation and guiding us towards a brighter future.
