Generation Z – The Trendsetters of Digital Communication

Digital Communication and its Effect on Generations

By Mahesh RathodPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Generation Z grew up with technology and they are good at it. I was once texting my little cousin and he sent me a series of emojis combines in a systematic form. I didn't understand what he was trying to tell me and I am a millennial. Generation Z's way of communicating is a lot different from how we millennials communicate. It almost feels like they came up with their own language with the complex use of ever-growing emojis, text faces, stickers and GIFs.

Who is Generation Z?

Also known as zoomers, the generation born in the mid or late 90s to the 2010s are the associated demographic. Depending on their country of birth, they may either be millennials or gen Z. They are both ethnically and racially diverse than any other generation to exist because of their previous generations cross-cultural relations.

This is the generation that was born with technology and easy access to information. Often people say that the types of generation is too smart and when they were of that age, they hardly knew how to play ball but that is because the previous generations never had such easy access to information.

Zoomers – The Digital Natives

Gen Z has long back overthrown millennials as digital trendsetters easily taking over social media apps. Have you ever played online video games with gen Z? They are brutal! And no, I am not just talking about skills here. It is the way they communicate.

When I was gaming with my little cousin, he sent me a gun text face in the middle of the game and I was left wondering when did he get the time to do that. I had to learn to generate a gun face just so that I could send it to my millennial friends to look cool. You can do the same, just click and copy from lennyface.online and keep up with the Gen Z. Keeping ourselves updated with the Gen Z trends has become essential now.

Generation Z & Multitasking

Generation Z is also known as the generation that can multitask over multiple screens while gaining information swiftly and seamlessly. When you are marketing a product and the target audience is Generation Z, a big picture and a handful of words are more than enough to communicate. According to research generation Z has even less attention span than millennials.

Before zoomers, millennials were considered to have a really low attention span but that has changed completely now. Gen Z is more comfortable communicating with pictures which also include emojis, GIFs, stickers and text faces and they can easily multitask across multiple screens while millennials are limited to communicating over two to three screens and prefer a mixture of texting and images.

Texting or Talking?

We all know the answer to that! According to a survey, 75% of millennials and zoomers said that they prefer texting over talking as it is more comfortable for them. For this digital generation, technology is an extension of themselves and their phone, social media accounts and apps are part of their life which takes over in scale of importance as compared to their offline interactions.

Fragmented Use of Social Media Platforms

Generation Z may have taken over all the social media platforms, but their usage of each platform is fragmented. How so, you may ask! For example, zoomers use Instagram for showing things that aspire to be or for sharing trendy contents while Snapchat is used for more personal real-life moments of day-to-day life. Twitter on the other hand is used for keeping up with global news whether it films, tv shows, music or fandom threads. Pinterest is like their artboard. They segregate
