In today’s economy we all can do with shopping tips to save money.

And yes, you read this subtitle correctly, I also want to share some tips to hopefully keep you in good health during shopping.

Just to keep things in perspective, in this article I am not going to talk about online shopping. I will focus just on water and bricks stores. .

Okay, first things first!

Tip 1

Before you set off to the store/supermarket, please make a shopping list. Making a shopping list enables you to be a bit more disciplined by sticking to what is on the list. I know not all of us can stick to a grocery shopping list. However, by making a shopping list you are giving yourself a chance to save money by trying your very best to stick to a shopping list.

Tip 2

When you walk into the store and grab your shopping cart (or trolley as known in many countries) — always ensure you wipe down the shopping cart handles with an anti-bacterial disinfectant or wet wipes. These days most stores do provide this at the entrance.

Store shopping carts carry a lot of germs and wiping down the handles will go a long way with ensuring the least amount of germs will be transmitted to you.

Tip 3

As you place your items in the shopping cart, always check expiry dates of your items. As much as stores do their quality checks they can make mistakes. I have come across expired items on shelves from extremely reputable stores.

Tip 4

Always pay attention to how food is handled in a store. Incorrect food handling can lead to spreading of germs which in turn can make a person fall ill.

For instance if you visit the bakery department of a store, observe if gloves are being used to touch food. If it is not, you have every right to insist for gloves to be used. I recently visited my local supermarket. As I approached the counter, I could see that a lady behind the counter was placing donuts on trays. She was not wearing any gloves. She was handling the donuts with her bare hands. As soon as she saw me she left what she was doing and attended to me.

When she attended to me she used her gloves and assisted me accordingly. I brought to her attention my feelings and opinion about her selected use of gloves. She acknowledged her mistake and apologized.

Tip 5

As you approach the till points and wait in the queue to pay, ensure you keep your distance from the person in front and behind you. Do not feel afraid to tell either one to keep their distance if you have to. It is your right not to be deprived of your personal space.

Keeping your distance especially in these shop queues goes a long way with ensuring you do not catch any germs from other people.

Tip 6

Always pay attention to what products and prices are rung up at the pay points. I have had many experiences where items have been scanned incorrectly. Always double check your till slip to ensure no mistakes.

Tip 7

This tip may sound as the most obvious. Always check your change at the pay points before leaving the store. Mistakes can happen, so always check.

Some may think I am going a bit overboard with the cleanliness tips, however it is wise to follow these tips to avoid catching unwanted germs which have the ability to make one ill.

Hope these tips have helped and hope you remember them for the next time you go shopping.

Enjoy the video below which re-emphasizes some of the points above. Feel free to share your additional shopping tips.

Take care! Happy and Safe shopping!
