The Top 10 Weirdest Things In 'Star Wars'

Star Wars is an incredibly diverse universe complete with intricate worldbuilding, characters, and plot points. However, despite the really cool things that make up the Star Wars universe, there are quite a few very strange things in the movies, TV series, comics, books, and even the merchandise that has been made from the franchise. Take a look below at some of the weirdest ones.

10. Death Sticks

Star Wars does not often deal with drugs as a main plot point, but there is a random one in Attack of the Clones. While inside a bar in Coruscant, Obi-Wan sits down for a drink while Anakin is off trying to find the would-be assassin. A man comes up to Obi-Wan and tries to sell him some death sticks, which clearly are a drug, probably hallucinogenic and dangerous. Obi-Wan convinces him to find something else to do with his life (via Jedi mind tricks). It is so random and a bit out of place. It could possibly be a commentary on the “Death Drive” and pursuit of pleasure or a “don’t do drugs” statement.

9. Zombie Gungans

The early 2000s can be classified as the age of the zombie stories. The entire world seemed to be obsessed with them, so it is no surprise that somehow zombies made their way into the Star Wars universe in W. Haden Blackman’s 2003 Clone Wars comic “The New Face of War.” In the story, the Separatists kill off a Gungan colony on one of Naboo’s moons using swamp gas. And suddenly, with no explanation whatsoever, several of the very dead Gungans come back revived. It’s an incredibly weird story.

8. Tauntaun Sleeping Bag

Sleeping bags aren’t normally weird, and usually ones that look like animals or favorite mythical creatures are fun and cool ones to have. However, Star Wars thought it would be a good idea to create one that looks like a tauntaun, which on the surface, doesn’t seem too bad. Except when you stop and think about what actually happened with the tauntaun “sleeping bag” in The Empire Strikes Back and realize that to make a nice and cozy “sleeping bag” for Luke, Han Solo had to cut open the dead tauntaun and shove Luke inside his guts to keep him warm. Yeah, think about that and a tauntaun sleeping bag just doesn’t seem quite as cool as before. Unless, of course, you don’t mind imagining you are sleeping inside a dead animal’s cut open guts.

7. "Jedi Rocks"

One of the main thoughts among Star Wars fans is that George Lucas should never have touched and re-done parts of the original three movies. Not only do we now have a CGI Jabba the Hutt in A New Hope, but probably the worst and most cringeworthy addition in the form of a replacement of Max Rebo Band’s “Lapti Nek” with “Jedi Rocks” in Return of the Jedi. In Jabba the Hutt’s palace, George Lucas decided to invest millions in CGI to create an extremely over-the-top, loud, and annoying song number that just doesn’t fit with the mood of the movie or the tone of the scene at all. I mean sure, it can be a catchy song, but it just doesn’t fit in with the rest of the movie.

6. Ziro The Hutt

The Clone Wars has its share of very weird characters, and Ziro the Hutt is definitely on the list. He is a purple Hutt, covered in prison tattoos that he acquired during a stay in a Republic prison. He was deliberately modeled after Truman Capone, according to Dave Filoni. He is incredibly sexually ambiguous and annoying and has an affair with Sy Snootles, a nightclub chanteuse. Definitely not one of the “most loved” Star Wars characters. Well, most of the Hutts don’t really make that list. Including Ziro the Hutt’s mother, who is just as cringeworthy and gross looking.

5. The Emperor Has A Son With 3 Eyes

In a compendium of six novellas released in 1992-1993, written by Paul and Hollace Davids, there were some really weird things. Some of them included talking whales and a reveal that Jabba the Hutt’s father’s name was Zorba. But probably the weirdest thing to come from this set of novellas was the storyline that the Emperor had a son with three eyes named Triclops. Yes, you read that right. If he were canon, then Rey would have an uncle with three eyes.

4. Ewoks On Ice

Back in 1986, an Ice Capades show existed that centered around the Ewoks of the Star Wars universe, and it was truly one of the weirdest things to come out of the Star Wars stories. The Ewoks are pretty popular Star Wars characters having their own spin-off movies and animated TV series. Funny enough, Seth Green and Matthew Senreich made their own Ice Capades version of The Empire Strikes Back called Empire on Ice for Robot Chicken.

3. Green Milk

Green milk isn’t necessarily weird if you think about it in terms of the worldbuilding in the Star Wars universe. Who’s to say that the animals in Star Wars don’t have green milk? It is an entirely other place. However, the green milk was definitely made weird by Luke in The Last Jedi when he milks the cow-like creature and drinks it right there, without any manners whatsoever, spilling a lot on himself. The scene seems to be there just as a nod to the blue milk originally introduced in A New Hope, but it is definitely done in a weird cringeworthy way that just makes us go, "Ew."

2. General Grievous’ Cough

Okay, so maybe this one isn’t a super weird fact since it has become a joke, but if you stop and think about it, we are introduced to this cyborg who just can’t stop coughing and hacking his “lungs” out while he is trying to kill Obi-Wan in an incredibly epic lightsaber battle. And it is actually incredibly distracting in parts. There is no explanation given during Revenge of the Sith, although if you watch 2005’s Star Wars: Clone Wars – Vol. 2, we do find out that he gets the cough from Mace Windu. However, that is in Legends, and in canon, Grievous seems to have the cough throughout the entire war.

1. Star Wars Holiday Special

By some, it is called a cult classic. Others want to say it doesn’t even exist. And there are those few who still enjoy it. But the question remains: did the Star Wars Holiday Special even need to be made? It is filled with weird and random storylines and characters, and just isn’t great storytelling. It has become the brunt of many Star Wars jokes. Did it need to exist? Maybe not. However, for all its faults, it is still responsible for some great fun among fans, whether to make fun of or to enjoy all the weirdness.
