The Next 'Star Wars' Anthology Series Should Involve These Two Characters

After All, They Were Responsible For Everything

By all accounts, Star Wars: Visions was a successful show for Disney and Lucasfilm, and it showed potential in other anthology stories in the Star Wars universe. Star Wars has always been a vast universe with plenty of stories to tell. Pivoting from that, Star Wars also has plenty of room for comedy. While Star Wars has had some comedic moments, I wouldn’t call them comedies. Furthermore, I think some of the funniest Star Wars moments have come from parodies like Space Balls, the Robot Chicken: Star Wars specials, and Family Guy’s Blue Harvest. Star Wars could be home to several genres exploring any number of infinite story possibilities. The franchise is seriously lacking in terms of comedy, and it seems committed to only wanting to create shows that are set between Episodes I- IX. Why not meet halfway? That is why I think the next anthology series by Disney and Lucasfilm should follow Tag and Bink.

Tag and Bink are lesser-known Star Wars Legends characters, and their story is told across five comic issues. However, you have definitely seen them before. According to the comics, they have appeared at, and caused, some of the biggest moments in the Skywalker Saga. Tag and Bink were originally Rebel fighters who were aboard the Tantive IV when Darth Vader boarded. They disguised themselves as stormtroopers to avoid getting killed and ended up on numerous misadventures on the Imperial side. They were in the TIE Fighter in A New Hope that unknowingly led Han, Luke, and Obi-Wan to the Death Star. They were also the guards that Obi-Wan sneaked past to deactivate the tractor beam. They eventually found themselves in Cloud City where they shot C-3P0. Why do they shoot 3P0? Well, they blamed 3P0 for their current situation.

If you think that is crazy, Tag and Bink were also in the prequels. As it turned out, they were actually Jedi Padawans and were definitely responsible for a lot of the odd parts of the prequels too. They were responsible for deleting Kamino from the Jedi archives. They were also the ones who fed Anakin those amazing pick-up lines about sand. Eventually, they found themselves in Return of the Jedi when Tag donned Boba Fett’s armor. This explained why in the movie Boba acted like someone who had never used Mandalorian armor before. They even intercepted plans for the second Death Star from an informant named “Many Both-Hanz,” and they somehow end up as the Emperor’s royal guards in the finale of Return of the Jedi.

So what was their deal? Did they really do all of this? No. Tag and Bink were created by Kevin Rubio (creator of the parody video TROOPS) for a series of comics during the Dark Horse era of Star Wars comics. They were based on the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead which followed two background characters in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet who unwittingly caused several events in that play. It is easy to see the parallels between the two works. Rubio, however, played with some of the absurdities of the plot of Star Wars and blamed it on these two characters who bumbled from one event to another.

Obviously, these stories aren’t canon. They are extremely tongue in cheek, and they are hilariously great stories. It would be super fun to see this Star Wars story get translated to the screen. Star Wars needs more variety in its world, especially in the comedy side. The anthology format also seems to work for the series, so why not take a chance on Tag and Bink? They are funny, they are cool, and they deserve recognition for single-handedly causing all of Star Wars. For all we know, they could also be part of “all the Jedi” that aided Rey in The Rise of Skywalker!
