Top 5 Genres ‘Star Wars’ Could Do Next

And We Would Love To See Them All!

Mike Flanagan recently stated that he would love to make a horror movie set in the Star Wars universe. That would be awesome, but you know what? It should not stop there. I would love to see a Mike Flanagan Star Wars horror film. He is a genius of his craft, and any horror film he did in the Star Wars universe would at least be interesting. However, Star Wars is quite literally a universe of possibility when it comes to genres. It could be a home for almost any genre, and there is no reason why there cannot be a new Star Wars movie every year that explores new topics, characters, stories, and, of course, genres. If we are going to get new Star Wars content every year until we die anyway, they might as well be different. These are just a few of the genres that Star Wars could house.

5: Horror

I am putting this here because I already mentioned it above. Horror is a genre that does not see itself a lot in the Sci-Fi genre, but that does not mean that it cannot work. In fact, Star Wars is possibly the best place for a horror film. Star Wars has a rogue's gallery of terrifying villains, and that does not even account for the creatures. There are dozens of creepy creatures that could put most monster movies to shame. A movie with Darth Nihilus would be scary without even adding anything to it!

4: Spy Thriller

Star Wars shows (and a few scenes in the movies) have featured characters going undercover, and spies are mentioned all throughout the series. However, we have never really seen these spies on screen, and no Star Wars film has been a true spy-flick. A film going deep into the Bothan Spynet could be amazing. It could also be great to see a film where the Spynet functions like MI7, and then we could get a Bond film disguised as a Star Wars film. Rebels going undercover in the Empire, a Jedi pretending to be a Sith, or Sith hiding as a Jedi Knight could all be amazing spy flicks in the galaxy far, far away.

3: Zombies

This entry is mostly predicated on how cool I think it would be to see Jedi or Sith slashing through zombies with lightsabers. The other part of this entry is based on how cool I think it would be to see clone troopers or Stormtroopers blasting zombies with their weapons. All jokes aside, zombies in Star Wars would be an interesting twist to the usual enemies in the series. There are really two paths it could take. It could take the fun and bombastic style of zombie movies where the Jedi, Sith, or troopers do exactly what I described above. On the other hand, it could touch on the zombie films of George A. Romero, and add a little more depth to the enemies. In a series that constantly talks about life, death, balance, good, and evil, it would be interesting to see how the introduction of the undead could play into those philosophies.

2: Crime Drama

While The Book of Boba Fett looks like it could fit this role, there is still a lot of crime stories that could be told in that universe. The criminal underworld is constantly referenced or shown in Star Wars films and series. There are several crime families that exist in the galaxy. After all, one of Obi-Wan’s most famous lines is “You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.” Obviously, there are a lot of stories there, and the underworld has largely gone unexplored outside of a few episodes of The Clone Wars and an unused plot point in Solo. All I am saying is “The Godfather in space” would be an easy sell.

1: Film Noir

Film noir is not a genre that has many modern iterations, but it is absolutely fantastic. There is a level of grittiness and mystery in film noir that a lot of movies miss the mark on, and it could work beautifully in Star Wars. Attack of the Clones briefly tried to investigate a mystery, and while I quite enjoyed it, a lot of people were not as enthused. That does not mean it cannot work though. Star Wars is full of mysteries ripe with questions. Whether it be a Jedi, Sith, or bounty hunter exploring it, it could add a layer of darkness and grit not often seen in Star Wars. It also has the potential to explore parts of planets and cultures that have not been seen in films or shows. Again, The Maltese Falcon in space is an easy sell for me.
