'The Adam Project' Director Reveals He'd Love To Direct A 'Star Wars' And/Or Marvel Movie

What Is Next On His Plate?

About a year ago, in a city far, far north… filming wrapped on Netflix’s The Adam Project. The film stars Ryan Reynolds as Adam Reed, a soldier from the future who crash lands in 2022 and has to team up with his younger self to save the world. It is an interesting concept, though one I doubt is all that original. It has just been released on Netflix and has already earned a fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Taking place on Earth, in our world, it seems about as far removed from the Star Wars galaxy as possible. However, the director would like to pay it a visit someday.

Director Shawn Levy has expressed interest in directing a Star Wars film. Considering the science fiction themes in his work, this could be a potential boon to the franchise if he decides to jump on board. He has also expressed interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as well, which has also seen its share of exemplary work by many directors over the years.

Levy speaks on the subject in his interview with Screen Rant:

"I certainly find both the Star Wars and Marvel universes compelling. It would have to be the right moment, the right story, but those would definitely be tantalizing opportunities. Other than that, I have to say I really want to keep making movies that refuse to be only one thing, that are a hybrid of heart and laughter and spectacle, because those are my favorite kinds of movies. They don't get made that often anymore and I feel really lucky that I've been able to make two in a row that are also original. And I don't ever take that for granted either."

This shows that he is more than interested in writing for and working with both of these famous franchises. It is a rather noticeable surprise, but a welcome one nevertheless. His science fiction stories could prove a boon to either franchise. It remains to be seen whether this will come to fruition as he seems content with his own original blend of ideas. If it does come true, it would be interesting to see the direction he takes with it.

Shawn Levy has had a successful career as both a director and a producer with many hits to his name. Initially starting out in the comedy genre, he would make the transition to science fiction in 2011’s Real Steel, which stars Hugh Jackman as a former boxer who has been replaced by robots and has to train one to fight like him. His previous film Free Guy, also starring Ryan Reynolds, was released just last year. In the film, Reynold's character learns that he is actually an NPC in an MMO game, and gets into various misadventures as a result of that forbidden knowledge. It remains to be seen if his previous works will have any influence on his hypothetical Star Wars or MCU project in the future. We could see Levy doing something with droids somewhere down the line.
