GO Gabby thought the boy was hitchhiking and told Sara. He stood on the side of the road, thumbs moving wildly, almost pointing up and out for the ride. He stared down, not alert enough to catch the driver's attention. They kept driving down the road, a Road Atlas spread open between them. Gabby didn’t know how to read a map. Step-by-Step instructions were comforting, workable. Seeing groups of lines spreading around one another to form a transportation system felt daunting, dangerous. Sara was pretending she understood. Gabby thought about the boy, standing by the side of the highway, needing help. Maybe he didn’t know where he was going, either. Without a smartphone, maybe he was scrolling the air for answers.

Linda always said Bowdoinham mornings looked like God forgot to turn the brightness up. My $50,000 Dream

Director Mike Hodges’ Flash Gordon (written by Lorenzo Semple Jr.) is a straight cult, camp romp through the four-color, cliffhanger world created by Alex Raymond in the "Flash Gordon" newspaper strips so many decades ago, in a completely different world. Buster Crabbe brought the comic-book hero—a football hero turned swashbuckling pulp outer-space warrior—to serialized life in old 1940s chapter plays, wielding a sword and a two-fisted, can-do, all-American fighting spirit alongside Dale Arden and Dr. Zarkov, and against giant reptiles bluescreened against desert backgrounds, where shoebox rocket ships on fishing line with sparklers in their tails set down to do battle with the forces of the Mephistophelian menace Ming the Merciless, who vaguely resembles Anton LaVey. Which, on the whole, makes perfect sense.
