NERC's Perspective on Energy Policy: A New Frontier in Grid Reliability
Introduction NERC, the North American Electric Reliability Organization, has recently elevated "energy policy" to one of the top five risks to grid reliability for the first time. This shift underscores the dynamic nature of the energy landscape in North America, covering aspects such as production, distribution, and consumption. As the guardian of bulk power system reliability and security, NERC continually assesses grid reliability risks through its Reliability Issues Steering Committee. In its biennial ERO Reliability Risk Priorities Report, NERC identifies and prioritizes five interconnected risks, with energy policy being one of them. This article delves into the impact of energy policy on grid reliability and offers strategies and recommendations to address this evolving challenge.

Artificial Biology
When people start fusing biology and technology, they have the ability to rewrite the code of life itself. In the world of biotechnology, there have been organ farms, governments that have used artificial wombs to rebuild populations, robots with biological parts, genetically altered humans who can heal people through touch, and much more. But what happens to our environment when humans begin to engineer life and turn into an invasive species, and what is going on underground in the secretive labs of biohackers? Would we evolve into a new species of life entirely, less human and more alien?

Killing Technology. Content Warning.
1. Cyberpunk "Cyberpunk" is a form of fiction given birth by the collision between societal decay and technological ascendancy. It was popular in the 1980s but still influences modern movies, television shows, comic books, and graphic novels, as well as music to a great degree. Films such as The Matrix, Blade Runner, Robocop, Akira, and newer offerings such as Cyberpunk 2077 have kept the genre alive. Its roots go back to the novel Neuromancer by William Gibson, the French comic art of Moebius as exemplified in Metal Hurlant (known in America as "Heavy Metal"), and the "New Wave of Science Fiction" pioneered by writers such as J.G. Ballard and Philip K. Dick. Its aesthetic is seedy and post-modern, its world populated by hardboiled cynics, cutthroats, hackers, corporate criminals, and brutal, militarized police. And, of course, the occasional terrorist (er, perhaps "freedom fighter"?) working to bring down the oppressive, dehumanizing system wherein cyberspace (as defined by William Gibson) has become the Alcatraz of the soul.
