'Star Wars' Finally Sheds More Light On The Mandalorian Purge & Night Of A Thousand Tears

A Night To Remember

However destructive we thought the Mandalorian Purge was, it was way worse. Finally, Star Wars has given us a look at the Mandalorian Purge and the Night of a Thousand Tears in canon. Mandalorian history (especially events on Mandalore post the rise of the Empire) has always been shrouded in mystery after the new Star Wars canon was established after Disney bought Lucasfilm. Since season one, The Mandalorian has been teasing the Night of a Thousand Tears, and The Book of Boba Fett just gave us more information on what happened on that tragic night. It also hints at the dark turn of the Mandalorian Purge.

The Mandalorian Purge has been hinted at several times in previous Star Wars projects. The most recent mention was in the latest episode of The Book of Boba Fett, and it gives us the best look at the event that we have seen on any screen. In the episode, The Armorer recounts the night as she melts the beskar spear to forge new armor. As she describes the night, we are treated to flashbacks of the event. The scene shows TIE Bombers performing bombing runs across the surface of Mandalore. This culminates in a massive explosion (presumably one of the major Mandalorian cities), leaving the planet looking like a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

This is easily one of the worst acts of genocide that we have seen the Empire commit on-screen. After the bombing, we see that the Empire also sent in Imperial security droids to take out any survivors and further the absolute destruction of the Mandalorian homeworld. The scene is highly reminiscent of the robot future depicted in The Terminator or the Sentinels attacking in the X-Men films. The level of destruction in those films is definitely equaled in these scenes.

The Armorer also describes these events as genuinely dark times in Mandalorian history. She states that the only reason the Children of the Watch survived is that they were already hiding in secret on the Mandalorian moon Concordia. During the Clone Wars, Pre Vizsla lead a splinter group called Death Watch from the mines of Concordia. The Armorer implies this was prophesied with the darksaber being given to Bo-Katan Kryze instead of won in combat. She says that if the darksaber isn’t won through combat, it could scatter their people to the far corners of the galaxy. That appears to have come to pass in the series since Mandalorians are few and far between.

With the seeds the show is planting about Mandalore, the Purge, the Mandalorians, and the Night of a Thousand Tears, we will likely see it in a future season or series surrounding The Mandalorian. This is probably not the last time we see scenes from the Purge or Night of a Thousand Tears, either. There will likely be more flashbacks, or entire future episodes could be devoted to the event. It would be interesting to see precisely how Mandalore fell to the Empire. Also, any Mandalorian content on the screen is good content. One of Star Wars’ most famous civilizations has gotten shockingly little screen time compared to other characters and people.

Of course, this is mere speculation. However, with the amount of foreshadowing the series is doing surrounding Mandalore and potential rulers, it would be odd not to see these story threads tied up at some point. I would expect to see many of these stories and flashbacks expanded upon in future series. The Mandalorian and surrounding shows are just getting started. There are still plenty more series to come. If they deliver on even half of the story beats they are setting up, they will definitely be worth checking out for any Star Wars fan.
