PLEASE LISTEN TO THE SOUND WHILE YOU READ MY STORY;)
~
I scroll for hours. Longer than hours, it seems - until time itself becomes meaningless, until minutes dissolve into one another and I can no longer distinguish between the time I have lived and the time I have merely watched pass.
I am no longer grounded.
I am no longer present.
I'm losing myself.
Tucked in my bed, every swipe, I surrender another fragment of myself.
My mind wanders further from my body, my consciousness drifts further from the world, and somewhere between one and the next, I begin to lose the person I once was.
But why do I care? It makes time go faster; I'm distracting myself.
Then, without a warning
My phone...
It switches off.
By itself... I swear!! I love my phone too much to do such a thing!
Pitch black...
A small, lifeless screen stares back at me. The artificial light that has occupied my eyes, my thoughts, and my hours is gone.
I look at my surroundings.
In its place is a void - an unfamiliar emptiness where the endless stream of noise once lived.
Speaking of that... what are those noises?
No, not the birds... wait, birds?
Somewhere beyond my window, birds are singing. Trees sway gently in the breeze; their leaves whisper against one another. I can hear it all. I had not realised I was missing; the world has been here all along waiting for me to notice it...
I step outside my house
And so does every single person in our neighbourhood.
Then, almost simultaneously, we all drop our phones.
And return to the real world...
Some take off their shoes and dance barefoot through the grass, laughing with a kind of freedom that seems to have been missing from their lives for years.
Others reach for the fruit growing in their gardens, tasting it before it has fully ripened, as though rediscovering the simple wonder of being alive.
Some lie upon the warm pavement, their faces turned towards the sun, allowing its light to fall upon then without the needs to capture it, document it, or share it with anyone.
Children run without being told to look up. Neighbours embrace people whose names they have never learned.
Laughter travels down the streets, unfiltered, and unrecorded. For once, nobody feels the need to prove that they are happy.
They simply are.
We remember how to be human.
We remember why we are truly here for~
~Perhaps this is what we were always meant to do, not spend our lives imprisoned within a man-made invention called technology, watching other people live while our own lives quietly pass us by, but to participate in the extraordinary experience of being alive.
I look around again.
The same people who stepped outside clutching their phones now appear almost unrecognisable.
The sadness that once seemed to hang invisibly in the air begins to loosen its grip.
The anxiety quietens.
The detachment dissolves.
In their place, something gentler emerges: presence, connection, and a renewed sense of self.
For the first time, we are not merely looking at the rid.
We are seeing it.
Some believe in Adam and Eve; others do not. But perhaps the story of the Garden of Eden offers us an enduring metaphor for the life we have gradually forgotten, a life in which humanity existed in close communion with nature, before the complexities of civilisation distanced us from the simplicity of being.
Being with nature and cherishing it, the place we call Earth.
But today... the screens are dark
And the world is awake
The question is whether we will still remember how to live when it does.
We were never meant to live in a world that humans have made as stressful as this...
My phone dying was important,
because
I remember my purpose~
