As we all know, Steven Moffat has announced that he is stepping down as showrunner for the hit BBC series #DoctorWho. The question now: Who is going to take his place? In January 2016 it was officially announced that Broadchurch showrunner Chris Chibnall will act as head writer to continue on the longest running science fiction show, and a very familiar face approves of this promotion.

Speaking to Digital Spy, David Tennant — who played the tenth Doctor from 2005–2010 and currently stars in Chibnall's ITV crime drama series — has explained that Chibnall was "possibly the only choice" when it comes to replacing the current showrunner, Steven Moffat.

"I think it was an inevitability that the world would turn to Chris. It's a big, massive, difficult job and it needs someone who is as enthusiastic and talented as Chris. It'll go from strength to strength. It's nice to know it's in safe hands, because it's such a prized property."

Series 11 As It Stands

Previously confirmed this year, Series 10 of Doctor Who will be Peter Capaldi's last series as the top role of the Doctor, and will depart the TARDIS Christmas of this year. Series 10 will see a fresh and brand new companion step inside the blue box: Bill Potts, played by actress Pearl Mackie.

It is currently unknown whether or not Pearl Mackie will continue as companion when Capaldi departs or if she will bow out of the show at the end of Series 10. To date, there is no actor/actress confirmed to play the thirteenth Doctor, and it is up to new showrunner Chris Chibnall to cast the new lead. Chibnall may be under a lot of pressure right now, but there are a few rumors on who could take on the big role.

Unfortunately, Series 11 of Doctor Who is set to air in Fall 2018, so Chibnall can have a break from screenwriting. Chibnall has revealed that he doesn't want to interfere with Moffat and Capaldi as they work on their last series together. In the meantime, Chibnall will be taking a short break before returning and casting the new Doctor. To pass the time waiting for the next series, why not watch the Series 10 teaser trailer and view the universe anew?
