If you’re a spiritual head like me, the words ‘Mercury retrograde’ will send you into a panic and have you preparing to go to spiritual war.
My friends and the majority of the population who are spiritually aware, hear the term ‘Mercury retrograde’ and associate it with negativity, but still to this day (no matter how many times I tell them) do not know what it’s really all about.
As someone who has been spiritually aware since 2019, I can promise you that Mercury Retrograde does not mean pending doom. However, they can cause minor to serious inconvenience. Most of the time it's serious inconvenience, but that's better than pending doom!
Unfortunately, we have one last Mercury retrograde this year from 13th of December to 1st of January 2024. Christmas in a retrograde? Ah, great.
What is Mercury retrograde?
Mercury retrograde is an astrological phenomenon that occurs when the planet Mercury appears to be moving backward in its orbit, as seen from Earth. In reality, Mercury is not actually moving backward, but its relative position to Earth gives the appearance of retrograde motion.
In astrology, the planet Mercury is associated with communication, intelligence, travel, technology and commerce. So, when mercury is in retrograde, these are all the areas of your life that you should expect to be affected.
Additionally, there is a Mercury retrograde two week pre-phase and two week post-phase.
The pre-retrograde phase of Mercury retrograde begins when Mercury first enters the shadow zone, which is the area of the zodiac that the planet will be moving through during the retrograde period. During this time, the energy of Mercury may start to feel more introspective or reflective. Communications and plans may also start to feel a bit hazy or confused.
The post-retrograde phase of Mercury retrograde begins when Mercury stations direct, which is when the planet appears to stop moving backward and start moving forward again. Time for tying up loose ends, completing unfinished tasks, and moving forward with plans and communication that may have been put on hold during the retrograde phase.
What can I expect during mercury retrograde?
This is the question everyone asks me and believe me I do not know because I do not have a crystal ball. Mercury retrograde does not mean one blanket thing for everyone, but it does give an indication of what you need to look out for.
Everyone’s life is different and it also depends on what star sign it is during the period of retrograde. The upcoming Mercury retrograde will be in Sagittarius, so if you have any of those in your sun, moon or rising, then you’re likely to be affected more than me who doesn’t have Sagittarius in my chart at all. There are more complexities to what star sign is affected during retrograde, but you’ll need to investigate that via the internet.
Whether or not Mercury retrograde is “bad” is a matter of interpretation and belief. Some people may experience challenges during this time whilst others may not notice any difference in their daily lives.
However, the planet mercury is associated with technology, communication, education, and transport. So please be prepared for these areas of your life to be shaken up a bit. For me, transport and travel is always a nightmare.
Secondly, because the planet is going to be in retrograde, this means that it will be going backwards. You can expect minor to major delays in all areas of your life, even the ones you cannot see progress.
What mercury retrograde should be
Mercury retrograde is actually seen as a time for introspection and reflection. It is a period when we are encouraged to slow down and pay attention to our thoughts, feelings, and actions. This can be a time for revisiting past issues, completing unfinished projects, or re-evaluating our goals and plans.
So while some people may view Mercury retrograde as a negative or challenging time, others may see it as an opportunity for growth and reflection. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to decide how they want to approach this astrological phenomenon.
Summary
During Mercury retrograde, I try my hardest to avoid major changes and I advise you to do the same — if it can be helped.
No surgeries, no moving out, no signing contracts (so hard to avoid), no declaring your underlying love for someone, no major purchases, no starting new projects (just focus on completing the old ones), be careful with money and do not believe the entire period is going to be bad!
These are just some common suggestions for what to avoid during Mercury retrograde, and your experience may vary. Whether you choose to follow the brief advice that I’ve given you is your choice.

I work with occultists, and they say they don't like the Mercury Retrograde due to misfortunes and moods. I am also an occultist and do believe in astrology, but I don't pay attention to the retrograde as an "impending doom" ordeal. I see it as making choices and remaining reasonable when things happen. I agree with your work.
