Over fifty years, Star Trek has entertained science fiction fans the world over, and it looks like now, with the release of the new Star Trek: Discovery trailer, fans of the Starship Enterprise will have more adventures on the final frontier.

Taking place 10 years before the USS Enterprise set off with Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, and Uhura, Star Trek: Discovery tells the tale of two star ships: the USS Shenzhou, led by Captain Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) and the USS Discovery, led by Captain Lorca (Lucius Malfoy himself, Jason Isaacs).

However, the trailer we've received seems to only briefly show Michelle Yeoh's captain, instead focusing on First Officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green from The Walking Dead). We never even see the USS Discovery in this trailer. In fact, I'm tempted to say the trailer primarily features footage from Star Trek: Discovery's first episode.

The trailer shows us the USS Shenzhou discovering some unknown object in the deep recesses of space, only to draw the attention of the Klingon Empire.

Star Trek fans have had issues with JJ Abram's special effects driven Star Trek reboot, which traded complex narratives for popcorn munching adventure. While Abram's work does have fans, there is a significant faction of fans who look on the old days of social commentary with nostalgia. Many Star Trek fans are hoping that Star Trek: Discovery can return the series to its old-school roots.

Immediately apparent is the excellent, diverse cast. Sci-fi fans have been clambering for racial diversity, and the trailer showcases both the second female captain in Trek history (Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager being the first), as well as a woman of color as a series lead. And new aliens! But for fans who are afraid of change, don't worry! Sarek's in the trailer. You know, Spock's dad. And Klingons, complete with head-ridges.

For better or worse, while this show looks to be a high-budget, beautiful sci-fi series, it is hard to say if this will draw more from Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation (becoming a more intellectual, sophisticated series) or be more like JJ Abram's reboot (explosions and lasers! Pewpew!). Either way, it is great to have Star Trek back in series form – and it's gotta be better than Star Trek: Enterprise.

Star Trek: Discovery will be coming out this fall on CBS All Access, the digital branch of CBS. Joining Michelle Yeoh, Jason Isaacs, and Sonequa Martin-Green are popular genre actors Doug Jones (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy), Shazad Latif (Penny Dreadful) and Kenneth Mitchell (Jericho). The first season will air thirteen episodes. A second season has yet to be green-lit, but should be very likely.
