My Review of "Star Trek: Picard Season 1"

An unexpected spin off of the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV show.

Star Trek: Picard was actually really unexpected. I have never been a big Star Trek fanatic but I have watched episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Unfortunately I did not watch some of the movies that came out after the TV series ended. Still I know the premise and some of the backstory of some of the characters.

Even better my brother who is a Star Trek fan was able to fill me in on the details. I did always like the moral element of the old TV shows. They would bring up subjects where you might not have such a clear and cut opinion about. It was intelligent to talk about all aspects of an issue so that you really know what to weigh in with your decisions. Seeing each of the characters of the show debating with themselves on crucial decisions was part of the fun of these shows.

This series starts out with a character named Dahj. She has some weird visions of Jean-Luc Picard who we remember as the captain of the Star Ship Enterprise back in The Next Generation. This series takes place years after he had retired from Star Fleet. He's living a simple life in a vineyard enjoying the retired life.

Dahj finds her way to Picard's vineyard and pleads for him to help. We all know how he is so it's not surprising that he is willing to give her a helping hand. The story goes for a crazy turn when they find out that she has crazy fighting skills and people are chasing after her. As the season progresses we learn a little more about her.

This is only the first two episodes. She actually dies very early in the season and there's a twin sister that comes into play. It brings up a lot of intrigue and mystery in what's going to happen and I started to get into the series.

The first season of Picard is really about the introduction of each of the characters that will help Picard on his adventures. This story of Dahj is merely a catalyst to get the story going and introduce Picard to his new crew-mates.

There's some interesting characters that join him in his adventure too. He has a colleague named Raffi that is a tough as nails loyal colleague that used to work under Picard before he had tendered his resignation. This brings up an interesting side story that talks about how Star Fleet had really changed direction. Picard and Raffi believe that Star Fleet has lost their way.

To add to the mix Raffi's friend Cristobal helps them out by allowing them to use his ship to fly to where they need to go. Cristobal is somewhat of a comic relief character to ease the tensions of the show.

Then there's Dr. Agnes Jurati that comes on board to help them with their mission. She has a backstory that is pretty interesting. It conflicts with their mission in a big way. Over the course of the season she has some moral decisions of her own when she finds out her directive isn't so black and white as she thought it was going to be.

One of the coolest characters to be added to their crew is Narek. He's this badass ninja romulan assassin. It makes you wonder if they should do some flashback episodes in future seasons because Picard got to know a lot of people like Narek in the past. Picard seems to have gained a ton of loyal friends over the years.

Speaking of a lot of friends there are a few cameo appearances from the old crew of the Star Ship Enterprise. I won't give away too many of them but one of the popular cameo characters of the old show has a bigger role in this new series. I'm sure a ton of fans of the old series will really enjoy their nods at the old TV show.

As for the previous movies that were based on the Next Generation I unfortunately don't really have much references to you. The only thing I understood was that commander Data had sacrificed himself to save the day in the last movie. That's very apparent in this TV series and it kind of plays a really important role in how the season develops.

As a person that doesn't really watch Star Trek I was pleasantly surprised with this series. It's a little more adult than the old series. You'll hear some swearing and the action is a lot more intense. I guess with new technology you can have a higher caliber TV series than you had back in the day. Still they don't depend on special effects here. This series is very much dependent on the story to keep it going.

Overall, I can say that this season was great. I don't think you need to be a Star Trek fan to like this series but it helps a lot. There are a lot of sci-fi elements to it but thankfully it doesn't talk about time travel or anything like that. I have to give this season a 7 out of 10. I was able to enjoy this season and curious as to what they have in store for next season.
