Lucasfilm released the first official teaser trailer for The Books of Boba Fett about five weeks ago. Clocking in at a mere 1:48, it was enough to spark online fan theories and speculation. Is Fett a crime lord now, forming a crime syndicate with Fennec Shand? Fans even translated the Aurebesh on the back of his new throne. Apparently, it says his name. And what’s with Fett claiming he is not a bounty hunter? Hopefully, these questions will get answered in the episodes allotted.

Speaking of the episodes. Lucasfilm just announced that the first season of The Book of Boba Fett will have seven episodes which will air every Wednesday starting on December 29. Most Star Wars fans will notice that this is one less episode than each of the first two seasons of The Mandalorian, which had eight episodes each. Long gone are the days where seasons lasted 15-22 episodes. Ten episodes of any season are about as long as we are going to get nowadays.

Although it has not been announced how long the episodes will be, judging from The Mandalorian (32-45 minutes) and other Marvel series, it is safe to assume episodes of The Book of Boba Fett could run around 40 minutes, which is twenty minutes too short for many fans. However, showrunners Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau know better than anyone how long it takes to tell a balanced story. Therefore, stretching out the show’s length to make each episode longer does not necessarily improve the series.

Despite the success of The Mandalorian, one of the show’s drawbacks was how short some of the episodes were—some just barely over half an hour. On the other hand, it became pretty clear early on that 32 minutes was all that was needed for that particular episode. Filoni and Favreau also have a terrific grasp on pacing, fitting everything in within the time allowed and still having a good amount of action and slower scenes.

The Book of Boba Fett will focus on the former bounty hunter and his new “coworker” Fennec Shand (played by Ming-Na Wen), who made her debut in the second season of The Mandalorian. The setting is a half-decade after the Battle of Endor, as seen in Return of the Jedi. The Emperor is dead (temporarily), Vader is defeated by his son Luke Skywalker, now a Jedi Knight. The Empire is scattered while the newly formed New Republic tries to contain the chaos caused by a governmental transition.

More than anything, Jabba the Hutt’s death at the hands of Leia the Huttslayer has caused major waves in the criminal underworld, leaving a vacuum waiting to be filled. Enter Boba Fett, played by Temeura Morrison. Since collecting Han Solo frozen in carbonite on Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back, Fett ran into some obstacles on the way to delivering the bounty to Jabba on Tatooine. These obstacles could be seen in the comic book crossover event, War of the Bounty Hunters. What Fett experienced changed him forever. Although Fett retains his cold, calculating persona, he has learned a thing or two about respect and that perhaps working alone is not always the best.

There is an opening for Fett to fill, and he is keen on building his own empire based on ideals he deems essential. Some might claim Fett has gone soft. However, one does not escape a sarlacc, work with Vader and Jabba, and become soft. No, Fett knows what it is like to be double-crossed and does not want to push that on someone else. Fett may ask his colleagues to speak freely, but if he does not like what he’s hearing, they will surely meet the end of a gaffi stick.

The Book of Boba Fett starts on December 29, 2021, and will conclude on February 9, 2022. Ludwig Göransson, who composed both seasons of The Mandalorian, also returns to score this series. Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau, Robert Rodriguez, and Kathleen Kennedy serve as executive producers. Rodriguez, along with Bryce Dallas Howard, Steph Green, and Kevin Tancharoen will direct the episodes.
