New 'Book Of Boba Fett' Images Show Off More Fennec Shand

More Teases Before The Premiere

Fennec Shand is shaping up to become one of the more popular female character in the Star Wars community. Maybe not (yet) quite as popular as Hera Syndulla or Ahsoka, but for someone who is clearly more on the side of an anti-hero, she is quickly becoming a fan favorite. Shand, played by 58-year-old Ming-Na Wen, had her debut in the episode "The Gunslinger" in season one of The Mandalorian. She was the target of Din Djarin and his treacherous sidekick Toro Calican, and proved to be more than worthy opponent. At the end of the episode, she was left for dead in the dunes of Tatooine. The very last scene saw her body approached by a then unknown man, who was later revealed to be Boba Fett.

The bounty hunter not only rescued Shand, but also kind of rebuilt her with cybernetic implants. This led to a bond between the two, maybe even something like a life debt. Shand returned in season 2 of The Mandalorian and after trying to kill Djarin again. She and Fett later reluctantly decided to help him to complete his mission of finding a mentor for little Grogu. The post-credit scene of the second season’s final episode then teased the spin-off series The Book of Boba Fett, set to premiere on December 29 on Disney+.

Similar to previous years, Empire magazine is dedicating a large portion of its January 2022 issue to the new series. As with The Mandalorian and even before that with the sequel trilogy, the magazine is giving away just a bit of the backstory of the new series, together with a bunch of high-quality photos, both from in front and behind the camera.

Three of these pictures give away the look of Wen’s Fennec Shand in The Book of Boba Fett, which is similar to that of The Mandalorian and also hearkens back to what she wears in The Bad Batch, an animated series set in the aftermath of the Clone Wars that takes place more than 20 years before the events of The Book of Boba Fett.

Being a very talented sniper, the first picture shows her holding a pulse rifle at the ready, while on the second photo she is talking to Fett, who is sitting on the throne that was previously occupied by Jabba the Hutt’s former majordomo Bibi Fortuna. The third picture shows Shand standing in the background while Fett is talking to a female Twi’lek.

The pictures do not give away much storywise. However, this is also not their intention. Their vibe is very similar to that of the teaser trailer that was released a few weeks back and also of the short television commercials that have begun dripping out during the last few days.

Executive producer Jon Favreau also revealed in Empire magazine that the series takes place in the vacuum of power that was created after Jabba was killed at the hands of Luke, Han, and Leia. In the five years that have passed since, Bib Fortuna tried to steer the criminal underworld on Tatooine, seemingly with little success. After Fett killed the Twi’lek, he now tries to reunited the various factions of Jabba’s former crime syndicate. However, he has to learn that having a big name in the bounty hunters’ guild does not mean that you will be respected in the criminal underworld.

Fett tries to rule his self-proclaimed kingdom “by respect,” but the teaser already shows that he will face quite some resistance. Director Robert Rodriguez, who also serves as an executive producer on the show, admits that the bounty hunter will have to switch into “barbarian mode,” if he wants to succeed. It seems that Fennec Shand will be close by his side, both in the fight scenes as well as during more quiet moments in Jabba’s former palace. It remains to be seen if the relationship between the two bounty hunters will turn into something more than just professional.

The January edition of Empire magazine can be pre-ordered both in print and in digital format directly from the publisher’s website.
