Lavender Lights: Prologue To A New World

A prologue into a story idea that has been swimming in my mind for some time. Lavender Lights is a sci-fi story with hints of murder, mystery, and romance.

December 1992

Through the course of 1992 over three-hundred thousand women became pregnant across the world. Most wouldn't find this odd in the slightest, actually to many doctors this would have been a rather low number for yearly pregnancy rates but this number didn't account for all pregnancies in world. In fact that small three-hundred thousand count was a group of women who had never had a child before due to fertility issues for one reason or another. To their doctors and their families it was an unexpected blessing for them and at that time it was the only abnormality of the situation.

January 2nd, 1993

Abigail Williams was the first of these women to give birth on January 2nd, 1993. Her entire pregnancy she had been fearful of losing the child as she had her last considering her struggles with not only conceiving but carrying to full term due to a rare birth defect that caused the lining in her uterus to not fully regrow after her cycles. At exactly 3:33a.m. she gave birth to a perfectly health baby girl with short black curls and bright emerald eyes, a daughter her husband and herself chose to name Raven Delilah Williams.

May 19th, 1993

By mid May over half of the three-hundred thousand women who had miraculously become pregnant in 1992 had delivered perfectly healthy children. At that time doctors had begun to notice a pattern in the births. The first was not one of the women ever needed labor induced, it was onset naturally. The second was the time of birth, for every women thus far since Abigail giving birth at exactly 3:33a.m. whether their labor lasted only a few hours or a few days in some cases.

December 31st, 1993

Through the course of the year another round of miraculous pregnancies seemed to fall over the world, once more women who had struggled to conceive throughout their lives or never believed they would carry a child from infertility issues. At exactly 3:33a.m. on New Years Eve the last women pregnant from 1992 gave birth to their miracle children and as January 1st 1994 began the new year at least five children across the world were born at that strange early morning time.

March 21st, 2003

Ten years had passed, Raven Williams the first of the miracle children born in 1993 having celebrated her tenth birthday back in January. Many more had given birth in the past ten years, all following the pattern and doctors beginning to study further into the phenomenon. The pattern was uncanny, every child born at exactly thirty-three seconds past 3:33a.m., every child healthy as can be despite possible hereditary issues that were likely to pass from parent to offspring. Ten years passed before they had any clue what else made these children different.

The Spring Equinox brought a change to the children who had already celebrated their tenth birthdays for that year. For some it was very minor at first, barely noticeable. For others it was a curse in an instant and no less than a death sentence as time went on. Raven Williams had grown into a beautiful girl, her black curls always kept loose and down past her shoulders as she hated having it restrained or cut. Those emerald eyes had stayed bright with wonder and curiosity, but around her birthday a minor change came to them, a very light flaking of lavender that seemed to peek through on occasion when she glanced in the mirror or the sun hit them just right. She was the first of many, and she all but signed the death sentence that followed for children like her.

Raven had an early passion for nature since before she could crawl. She had often told her mother Abigail after her father passed away that she could hear the flowers and vines singing to her and she had a rather adept green thumb early on. Abigail never thought anything of it and Raven spent most of her time outside school in their home garden where flowers and herbs that had never bloomed before her birth now grew abundantly. On March 21st, 2003 Abigail came outside expecting to see Raven in the garden as she often was only to find her beloved daughter gone. Calling out her name Abigail frantically searched for near an hour around the house before she heard her daughter laughing out in the woods near their home, not even hesitating as she ran through the trees where she could hear Raven. Bursting through the tree-line into a partial clearing she went to chastise Raven for having run off in the woods by herself but what she saw before her left her speechless.

Old oaks that stood a hundred feet tall seemed as though they were bowed toward Raven, ivy vines swaying and moving as if they were tentacles in the air and flowers that would never bloom in the current season at full blossom as the girl spun on bare feet in the grass with her head tipped back and laughter rolling from her lips. Abigail stared in fascination at her daughter and the forest around her before Raven finally stopped and realized her mother was there. In that single instance it was as if the air froze around them, the plants suddenly drained of life near Raven's feet but for a single ivy vine that seems to thicken and take a near metallic sheen to it. “Time to join daddy,” was all Raven Williams said, her mother turning to run with a scream on her lips as she saw her daughter's green eyes had turned purely lavender in that moment and she felt the cold stab of the ivy vine as it drove through her chest with enough force to crush her bones.

October 31st, 2003

It wasn't until the Autumnal Equinox that it became clear that Raven had killed her mother when the foster family that took her in befell the same fate. By that point many of the children born in 1993 had reached their tenth birthdays and had begun showing stunning and terrifying abilities. Some did all they could to keep their abilities hidden while others were shown off like some prize trophy by their families. Doctors and scientists were obsessed with figuring out what had given these children the grand abilities they suddenly possessed, tracking down children from families who had been born at that early hour in 1993 who had already come into their abilities seemingly the day they turned ten years. They also began tracking the children who had yet to come into their transition, in many cases paying off families to take the child as they played on the parents fears when Raven Williams, the first child born of the chain was reported to have had a psychotic break and had killed not only her own mother but close to twenty others since.

That was only the beginning.
