Above Ground
We were crouching behind a dumpster. I was too terrified to acknowledge the stench of stewing garbage assaulting my nose. The moisture between Karina and I’s intertwined fingers intensified as she hugged our palms together tightly. We were both sweating profusely from our marathon sprint in the stifling heat to our current hiding place. Our threadbare clothes were molding to our bodies like a second layer of skin. Time wasn’t in our favor as the horde of daywalkers began to close in on us. There was no escape; we were going to die.

Hailee felt tall when she stood up but there was nothing to measure herself against. Her body was soft and achy like when a fever breaks or after a long, unintentional sleep. As she stretched, her arms reached much further toward the sky than felt familiar and her elbow looked like two braided strands of a large knotted tree. Dust and a flat Earth spread as far as Hailee could see. She blinked as if to wash away a dream. Whipping her head from side to side, looking for color, or shape, texture, and density, Hailee wanted to make sense of the empty world. Her movements sounded like stormy winds.

The year 2044 Post-apocalyptic earth where cyborgs outnumber the human race. The majority of humans became engulfed with the dependency of technology, distracted, living in an illusion of a utopian society. When in fact it was slowly but surely turning into the exact opposite. The agenda of the darkness was to have complete mind control over humanity shifting earth into a slave planet. Where the consciousness of humanity was uploaded into a mass centralized hard drive. The plan from the very beginning was to instill fear, causing civilization to give up free will and hand it to the darkness on a silver platter. A combination of fear, brainwashing, repeating unwarranted propaganda, and distraction was a perfect recipe to complete their diabolical plan. The darkness knew the outcome, for their frequency was unable to increase to where we were heading. Therefore, they did everything possible to keep humanity in a low-frequency state.

The Star Wars universe has brought forth many iconic ships and ship designs: the Empire’s fast and agile TIE-fighters with their striking engine sounds, or the mighty star destroyers with their massive firepower. The versatile X-wing fighters or the big Mon Calamari cruisers of the Rebel Alliance. And of course, the Millennium Falcon, the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.

I shuddered awake. Not from a dream, though I wish it were one. The air was chill against my skin even under all these quilts. It was like icicles forming in my lungs. Little shards speckling my dark curled eyelashes. Through the window only meager sunlight filtered in; weak as if straining to warm the earth. The twinkle of a once radiant smile, now blurred by frost. The glass...its like a slowly shattering prism. The crackle of my fireplace alerted me to the dwindling of the last embers of life sustaining flames.

It’s one thing to know you’ll die someday, but another to know the exact date and time that it will happen. It seemed trite though to worry about my fate when so many bodies cluttered the landfills.

Well, humans finally did it. We went and started the final war, or so they say. In the blink of an eye, things changed. They say it wasn’t a state actor that caused the collapse but many smaller acts by terrorist cells. First they targeted oil pipelines. They hit the computer networks that ran them and shut them down. This caused prices to skyrocket across the US and eventually Canada, Mexico and farther out.

He was out digging again in the fields, at the edge where it wouldn't interrupt the harvest or be as readily noted. He knew there was something special he would find to trade this time. His mother chastised him each time he shirked his chores, but he had a deep knowing, something drew him to this place time and time again. So far, he had been able to get extra meat and seeds for his family with the prizes he had uncovered, some sort of round disc that was shiny on one side and had words on the other, a toy "car" that would drive itself with winding up, metal pots and more. So his mother was not too harsh on him. But, he knew there was something even better he would find from the "time before". That was what all the adults called it, the nebulous world that had existed with electronics, motorized conveyances and medicine. Now, you were lucky to make it to your 20th year without a crippling or deadly illness taking you and if you did and managed to create a family, the rare child was conceived. In that way he was precious being in his 9th year now and healthy.

“It’s officially been one year since the disappearance of approximately one third of the world’s population, some are beginning to speculate the rapture is to blame, if that’s the case, then what does that mean for the rest of us? I’m Harry Hubbard, your host for this evening’s news.”

"Optimistically," mother looked back at Phil, "you can view life as an experience and not a mere burden." "Well, when it comes to doing the things I don't like, I'd rather take the pessimistic approach," joked Phil.

Next year will mark ten years since George Lucas sold his Star Wars franchise to Disney. Prior to the sale, Lucas imbued his original Star Wars Skywalker saga with his own political beliefs against a sci-fi space opera backdrop. Lucas built his simple story into a multi-billion dollar empire. Despite a board seat as part of the sale, Lucas had no idea how Disney would treat the Star Wars property. Would they keep his message, or would they embed their own?

Gerry opened his eyes, blinking in the unnatural white light. The harsh smell of bleach filled the room, lacing each laboured breath with a chemical bite.
