Longing for Death
The ashes rise from the plume of smoke that fills the air. The ozone is filled with debris that block out most of the sun’s warmth. I can’t remember the last time I was truly warm… Dying in a nuclear explosion was the easiest pathway through the wake of humanities destruction. The world went from bad to worse before the bombs fell. We all knew it was a matter of time but shock still took me when I realized what had happened. For those who remain in the wasteland we envy those who perished within the flash of burning light. A bright light and then nothing more. No worries of finding your loved ones, no worries of finding clean water, no worries of being torn apart at your very soul from the lost you have endured.

“How long’s it been, Zeke?” Zeke turned his head. The scratched, dented motorcycle helmet he wore obscuring his features behind a black, mirrored visor.

I’m Arianna Fleming and I live in Colony 452 somewhere around where Texas was before the nuclear war. They make us wear white, something to do with nuclear white flashes. Out of all the colors white... Really? Other women say it helps with keeping an eye on our figure, well I lost that about 10 years ago when my body parts started refusing to stay where they were told. This damn jacket always getting stuck; it’s going to save your life out there they say. That’s the truth, random ice storms that appear out of nowhere. The worst thing is the ice surges, one minute you’re walking through flat ground, the next you are ankle deep in bone freezing ice and snow, like a cartoon artist drew it on you. You have about 2 minutes to get into a house before you are a popsicle, yea the jacket helps. No one is sure why this happens, it’s just the way it is in our colony, we don’t have the smartest people here. At this point who cares, we are back in the cave man days trying to survive. I heard there used to be technology and the ability to watch something called a TV where people were entertaining you on a screen for hours at a time. There is none of that anymore. There is nothing anymore, just living, just surviving and helping with the colony.

A sharp and textureless plane of nothing but black was spread flush above the earth. Carmen O'Reilly believed it to be beautiful. Or more accurately, she thought she believed it to be beautiful, anyway. It was beautiful in the way that old pictures of Yellowstone, before the industrialization, are beautiful. The kind of beautiful the old folks shed a tear at. Nature is beautiful. It's just one of those fundamental facts of life. And the sky was nature.

TUESDAY, 8TH OF SEPTEMBER 2020 We were meant to go to Mount Rushmore in like two weeks. We had suffered enough, no? Surely some small recompense was deserved, for all the shit that God threw at us this past year, y’know, light at the end of the tunnel, silver linings and all that. I think I’d have preferred the plagues from the Bible to the ones that infest us just lately. Yep, actually, on extended pondering I’ve determined that I would definitely prefer frogs and darkness to global pandemics and civil unrest.

The light was blinding as the door swung open. Pain shot from his skull down the spine as they jerked him to his feet by a handful of hair. As they dragged him down the hallway he knew today had to be the day. How long had He been there, how many years they been torturing him daily, has it only been months? If she was going to come for him, he would be free already. They must have her too. He had to tell them it was more than just a medallion. He had to convince them to pry it open and as it melted in front of them he could laugh and say that was it and then maybe just maybe they would end his suffering and question him no more.

I really don’t like writing, but it’s my only option left. Have you ever found yourself thinking you were in one place only to discover too late you’re somewhere else completely? That’s where I found myself last week, and now that I realize how dire the situation is I must put it down in words, if not for future generations, to maintain my own sanity.

He didn’t know how long he had been standing there. What windows were left were tint black and peeling, a vast, bleak and ebony wall, its broken mirrored gaze projecting little more than dust and air.
How Palpatine Was Betrayed By His Most Trusted Ally In 'Star Wars'
Sheev Palpatine, aka Darth Sidious, aka "The Senate," is depicted as a very sneaky villain throughout the Star Wars saga. He is able to manipulate the galaxy through political maneuvers, to the point where he makes some people complacent with the idea of an Empire rising and the Jedi being gone. He accomplishes this with many chess pieces on his board. Some people he straight up uses, but some people he has as allies. However, even his closest allies may not be completely trustworthy.

Colors of the Earth faded the second human hearts turned from red beauty pumping life to silver stillness. The flowing river of the body turned into a stiff metallic heart-shaped locket inside, encasing all of the memories of what used to be. Everything turned to grey. Those who used to run the diverse societies are the very reason the world was plagued and overrun by greed. Believing only their routine and outdated structures for countries were the only way and never trying to find a middle opinion caused intricate architecture to fall, leaving rubbles and cracked glass to cover the dirt paths that remain. Traditionals who yearned for power, yet cowered behind their tidy desks, could not adapt to the changing times. Their failures to become kind human beings led to the ultimate nuclear demise of the Earth. The heavy smog clouds our vision along with the thick lens of the gas masks, but our visions were gone long before the cloud of death emerged in the horizon. The future was no longer a dream, here everything dies. No more blue sky, warm yellow sun, or even the old green paper with different numbers that used to be one’s lifeline. The only luxury we can afford now is fear. Hiding, fighting, and running are the only activities that fill up the day, allowing us to escape from time before the clock catches up. Running on the dry, crackling ground produces sounds of static. The dim world of chaotic destruction turning lives into a flickering, yet empty screen. The only channel available to watch and try to connect to is the hovering cloud of death that resembles static nothingness.
