I asked Chat GPT how to create an AI writer that can connect to the internet.

This is what it said. Is anyone up for the challenge?

If, like me, you’ve been impressed with the various AI article writers that have flooded the market as of late, then you’ll also likely understand my main frustration with them.

Most of the article writers out there, like Chat GPT, for example, do not have access to the internet like you and me. They are trained on vast amounts of text data from the internet but do not have real-time connectivity to browse the web or access current information. For Chat GPT that information is only up to the year 2021. It's still a fantastic amount of information, but what happens when, for example, you would like assistance creating a review post for some software released in 2022?

Of course, you can do all the work yourself and obtain the information required, but we are looking at AI writers from the perspective of how they can help us write, and as of now, this is a major missing piece of what they can offer.

I am no engineer or artificial intelligence expert. I wouldn't have the faintest idea of creating an AI writer to connect to the internet to gather real-time information. Or if it is even possible at the time of writing this post. So what did I do? I asked Chat GPT, of course.

Prompt Used: How can one develop an AI writer with the ability to leverage the internet for real-time query search? Please comprehensively explain the necessary steps and considerations involved in creating such a system.

Chat GPT Answer: Developing an AI writer with the capability to utilize the internet for real-time query search involves a multi-step process that combines natural language processing (NLP) techniques, web scraping, and intelligent information retrieval. Here is a comprehensive explanation of the necessary steps and considerations to create such a system:

Data Collection: Gather a diverse and extensive dataset of text to train your AI writer. This dataset should cover a wide range of topics and writing styles. You can utilize publicly available text datasets or scrape data from websites that permit data collection.

Natural Language Processing (NLP): Preprocess the collected text data to clean and format it for further analysis. This preprocessing step includes tasks such as removing unnecessary characters, tokenization (splitting text into words or sentences), and applying techniques like stemming or lemmatization to normalize words.

Training a Language Model: Utilize a language model architecture, such as GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer), and train it on your preprocessed dataset. This training process involves feeding the text data to the model and adjusting its weights iteratively to minimize prediction errors.

Web Scraping: Implement web scraping techniques to enable your AI writer to search the internet for real-time information. This involves using libraries like BeautifulSoup or Scrapy to extract relevant data from websites or utilizing APIs to retrieve specific information.

Query Understanding: Develop a mechanism to parse user queries and extract relevant keywords or topics. This step is crucial for formulating effective search queries that the AI writer can use to retrieve the most relevant and up-to-date information from the internet.

Intelligent Information Retrieval: Incorporate the parsed queries into the AI writer’s workflow to enable it to search the internet for relevant information. This can be achieved by leveraging search engines, targeted APIs, or customized web scraping to retrieve web pages, articles, or other relevant sources based on the user’s query.

Context Integration: Integrate the retrieved information with the AI writer’s language generation capabilities. The AI writer should be able to analyze and process the obtained data, select the most relevant content, and generate coherent and informative responses based on the user’s query and the retrieved information.

Evaluation and Iteration: Evaluate the performance of your AI writer by testing it with a variety of queries and comparing its responses with manually curated content. Continuously refine and fine-tune your model to improve its ability to retrieve accurate and up-to-date information from the internet.

When creating an AI writer with internet search capabilities, it is crucial to consider ethical and legal considerations. Respect intellectual property rights and terms of service when scraping data from websites, adhere to legal and ethical guidelines, and ensure the responsible use of the AI writer in accordance with the relevant regulations and policies.

So there you go. It appears to be entirely possible. I am sure many of you out there already know this. Maybe you work in the computer, engineering, or AI fields and have thought about creating it yourself. Or maybe, like me, you just wondered if it could be done and how much help it would be to utilize the internet with AI. Either way, let me know what you think in the comments. I would be fascinated to hear from some far smarter people than myself who have experience with AI and what their thoughts are!
