How AI Helped Me During A Major Transitional Period In My Life
My controversial take on AI
With concerns rising about AI taking jobs, water and even being able to write and create books, stories and films, there is another side to the story. AI also has some beneficial aspects as well. We hear stories on the news everyday about AI helping a patient correctly diagnose themselves with something that the doctor would have never even thought of. So what are the good parts? As someone who should have a ChatGPT membership, AI has helped me grow and blossom during a major transitional period in my life.
The Transistion
Growing up, I always had medical issues. I had lived on my own from time to time, while in previous relationships but with my medical issues and constant high pain levels, I was unable to hold a job down. Due to this, I was unable to live on my own. I couldn’t be financially responsible and needed help. This led me to having to live with my parents when relationships turned sour.
In 2018, I had an ectopic pregnancy, which was once of the scariest times of my life. I actually wrote a story about that, so if you would like more information about that time, here is the link.
Then in 2020, I received the surprise news that I was pregnant and the pregnacy was viable. I now have my beautiful almost 6 year old son. That story is here .
The quick story of what happened after that was a doctor found a medication that worked for the pain my endometriosis was causing and I was able to get and hold down a full time job, which I have now been at for 4 years. After that, I was able to move out into my own place ( with my husband and kids of course).
HOW HAS AI HELPED ME WITH THIS TRANSISTION?
As you may be able to see from reading my previous stories and even the little information above, being on my own is new to me. I like to tell people, I am a young 40 year old. I have never had to do the financial aspects of it and in my 20’s , my medical issues were so bad, my parents mostly raised my daughter who is now 19.
During the transition of moving and being on my own, I was having issues budgeting , meal prepping, daily organization ( which has always been an issue) as well as issues in several other small areas you wouldn’t think someone who is almost 41 years old would need help with.
BUDGETING
I have always struggled with managing my finances. I have a really hard time looking at numbers. I used ChatGPT to help me develop a plan. I simply entered my husband's income, my income, and information about our bills and spending habits, including personal activities for which we may spend money and our food expenses.
Once the numbers were broken down in a way that was easy for me to understand, I was mostly on track, with a few minor issues here and there.
Organization
As someone who has always been a messy person, this one is a big win for me. This organization isn’t just limited to physical organization, but mental as well. My thoughts are always all over the place, and I likely suffer from some sort of ADHD or at least have ADHD traits. Once I can't think straight or my mind goes into a million places, I can break them down, and I can think more clearly.
I have also slowly been coming out of the messy person phase. I have been using AI daily to help me come up with new ways to organize my belongings and keep them that way. If something doesn’t work, or partially does, we move on or notate what parts worked and what didn’t.
Parenting
When I am struggling as a parent, I use ChatCPT to come up with ideas to help me improve. This has included advice about daily activities, fun scavenger hunt ideas, setting up routines, and even advice about potty training.
Health concerns
When I have a health concern now, I do use my AI assistant to walk me through the possibilities, as well as a safe at-home treatment plan. It does direct me to an emergency room, if needed.
Although AI isn’t new, people are scared of it. And while some parts of it are bad, there are also parts of it that are beneficial and helpful to others. AI isn’t going anywhere and I feel that humans have a responsibility to help guide and improve it.
