Gina Carano Found Out About Lucasfilm's Firing Through Social Media

How Word Traveled

When the news broke that The Mandalorian star Gina Carano had been fired, not many fans were surprised. It turns out, Carano herself may have been a little surprised since she learned about her own firing the same way most of us did; through a social media post. Carano had been the subject of much controversy over the last few months, but no official action had been taken until a definitive social media post by Lucasfilm saying the actress didn't currently, nor would she in the future, work for the studio.

Carano is a polarizing person, with opinions on both sides of the political spectrum butting heads over the things she's been saying in recent months. The former MMA fighter has had a talent for drumming up drama with her social media posts. Ever since the posts started, many fans have been calling for her removal from the show due to what they considered transphobic remarks as well as stoking the fire around anti-masking and the supposed election fraud surrounding the 2020 election results. On the other side, fans have been applauding her boldness in coming out and saying what she feels, wanting her place reinstated in The Mandalorian and future Star Wars entries.

The drama surrounding Carano started with a post where, when asked if she would consider adding her pronouns to her bio, Carano responded by adding "beep/bop/boop" to her bio, a move many felt was mocking the transgender community. Adding pronouns to your bio has been a common practice among both trans and cisgender people on social media, as a way to avoid misgendering people by accident as well as adding awareness for the transgender community. Her move angered the transgender community and many of its allies, many considering it offensive and mocking of a serious practice. Carano responded by removing the "pronouns" from her bio, citing a conversation she had with so-star Pedro Pascal as why but refusing to apologize, and instead saying she was "drawing attention to the abuse of the mob in forcing people to put their pronouns in their bio."

Following that incident, she was seen mocking masking protocols and tweeting about the 2020 supposed election fraud committed by the Democrats. Many felt it stoked the flames around both topics and helped spread misinformation, a dangerous precedent for someone with the amount of outreach she had. The move did bring people on her side of both of those issues to rally, praising her willingness to exercise her free speech to bring light to issues they deemed overshadowed.

It all came to a head in her latest move when she shared a social media post, likening having a conservative political view to being Jewish during the holocaust. The latest move sparked a lot of outcry as being anti-Semitic, causing a lot of reactions as being offensive to people of Jewish descent as well as an attack on those with left wing political views as well. The move led to her being fired from Lucasfilm, with them denouncing her actions and saying she won't be in future projects. The move has been applauded by those upset by her actions and has been denounced by her supporters as another brash move by "cancel culture" to silence strong speakers, with many of them vowing not to watch any more Star Wars products until she's been rehired.

Many of us learned of this move through a social media post by Lucasfilm themselves, but it turns out, so did the woman in question. According to her, around the time of her first post to strike controversy, Lucasfilm excluded her from press for The Mandalorian season 2. While not a happy decision, she agreed as not to take away from the hard work of her co-stars. She's stated that was the last time she was contacted by Lucasfilm, with no official contact to announce her firing happening. The news of her being removed from any products came fresh to her as it did to us through the same sources.
