Ciy of the Lost- A Mermaid Tale

This is a short one off story that I have been editing from its original draft, I am not a big fan of mermaids and sirens however they are a subject of fantasy and I wanted to push my writing boundaries.

Our story starts not with landscapes of beautiful woodlands and mountains, but of deep blue waters with waves that ripple and crash, driving white horses across golden sands leading up to forgotten coastal paths. Deep within these beautiful clear blue waters, is a palace of crystals shimmering bright beneath the waves out of reach of the cruelty of man, a palace of creatures which need not the air from above, creatures half humanoid and half fish.

See a mermaid with beautiful iridescent greenish blue scales fleeing the judgement of the King beneath the waves, for he has not only banished her but disowned her. To him she is nothing just a cursed name now, in his mind she shows no love only betrayal, this mermaid was meant to be his wife yet she fell for a mortal man.

She swims in shame away from the beautiful city of shimmer crystals that settle deep beneath the waves hidden from mortal view, she lets the waters current drift her deeper into the oceans depths, to the darkest area with such fearsome creatures an area to which she has never travelled before but now must call her home. These fearsome creatures that seem so strange to herself yet seem so beautiful in an alien way, fish with lights that let them find their way though the darkest depths of caves that all seem to maze there way though this deep water world.

She follows these creatures eager to learn of their ways hoping to truly find herself a new watery home and as she drifts though oceans deep she finds her way into a large domed cave, hiding from any view of daylight or moonlight. Sharks seem to circle round with eerie towers that stretch up within the water with these strange fish swimming about care free, it almost seems this cave with towers of dark coral is a dark palace that she may be safe within. And while she continues finding her way though this lost forgotten city she remembers so is alone and no live other than she fearsome fish seem to live here as bones of her kind litter the sand bed of the floor and yet she swims though this palace tomb feeling more and more at home.

Finally entering what was once an elegant throne room seeing a small crown glowing iridescent green and blue like the scales of her tail, this crown seems to lay on the floor, lost as if discarded without care. Her gentle pale fingers take hold of the glowing crown picking it from the ground as it seems to sparkle and glitter filling the room with a glow so bright, she can now see shadows moving around within the dark coral walls.

Yet with a rumble from deep below she hears a rushing of tentacles, unprepared she is caught within the grasps of suckers upon thick tentacle arms, holding her tightly stopping her from drifting any further within this forgotten palace. With eyes of elegant emerald green wide with fear, she looks upon the beast, a far more fearful creature of the deep, the last true king of the ocean depths, a king to whom lost a great battle long since forgotten, a king of magic within the waves the rightful king of the oceans forgotten in time by the ignorance of her kin.

His flesh grey and veiny with eight tentacles gliding him though the cold water depths with suckers hold his prey so cruelly tightly, his eyes the most brightest lemon hues with flashes of red veins that piece deep within the heart. She knows that she is trapped with no way out, yet as this once great king of the oceans gazes at her he loosens his grip till letting her go, its as though he knows that he understands why she is there within his forgotten palace. And as she gazes upon him in fear he lightly tugs the crown from her delicate hands placing it neatly once again on top his bald head.

As the years pass she has become used to the darkness of the deepest ocean depths, she's learnt who the true king of the oceans is and gladly she slumbers beside him, swimming within his temple safe from sharks and the creatures of the light waters that have forgot the true king of under the water world.
