Black to Back

A black man and his little black book.

It’s Tuesday night and he finds himself checking his emails while driving. Yes, he is entirely aware of the dire consequences of doing that, but he persists. He stops at a red light and comes across an email that claims to help him come into possession of $20,000 in 6 months. At first glance, he thinks “just another company trying to scam hardworking people out of their life experiences”. Then he thinks for a moment and says “well if someone spent the time writing this email and I spent my time reading it, I am halfway to that $20,000.” So, he decides to take the leap and follow the instructions given in the email. The instructions in the email are as follows; 1. Get a small black book, one that can fit in your back pocket. 2. Every day at 7 in the morning you will write the exact day you want the money why you received it. 3. Every night at 7 pm you will read every single sentence you’ve written from the day you started till the present. These are simple rules to follow and he did just that.

For the next 3 weeks, he would wake up and write in the little black book and read it out loud to himself right before he showered. He had no idea how this $20,000 was going to get to him but for once in his life, he has complete faith. Anything that would make him question his faith was meant with violence. He was going to get that $20,000 and he believed nothing, and no one was going to stop him. Three months go by and this new thing he started doing because of one email he read is now a habit he cannot seem to stop. He reaches a point where the little voice inside his head doesn’t even have to remind him anymore. The little voice doesn’t have to bully him to write or read what he wrote in the little black book. “That is amazing! I completely forgot that this thing I am doing is solely based on faith and that at the end of the six months I will somehow receive $20,000.” He says to himself in astonishment. Is it possible to get $20,000 simply from writing? Maybe this company that sent this email is just trying to make money off him somehow? That doesn’t make any sense though. One thing is for sure, he is now more than halfway to the $20,000 because he read the email and is now 4 months into writing and reading.

A couple of weeks go by and it happens to be valentine’s day. He did not plan much for he and his partner so decided to be spontaneous and just take a drive out to the city. They drive around and this tiny little book shop that had its lights caught his attention. He saw people walking around inside and abruptly parks the car. They go inside and prance around looking at all sorts of books. They are spending their night at a bookstore instead of a restaurant. Miles Davis was playing in the background; he enters the flow state and loses track of time while browsing through the philosophy section. From the corner of his eye, he notices his partner taking pictures of him. This slight change in his attention brought him back to reality and he realizes that it is 7 pm and it is time for him to read out loud what he had written in the black book earlier in the day. “Shit, do I go to the bathroom and then read it, or do it just do it here?” He becomes aware of the fact that at home no one can hear him so he can read as loud as he desires. Now he is in public and reading out loud that he will magically be receiving $20,000 on a specific date seems to him a bit random and delusional. However, he has had faith and being very disciplined up to this point so there was no going back. He moves forward because he won’t go back. He takes a deep breath, looks around, and sees people still walking about minding their business. He then takes out the little black book and starts to read… “By March 15, 2021, I will have $20,000 dollars in my bank account. I am willing to write in return for this money. My faith and belief are so strong that I can already see it and touch it.” He closes the little black book, puts it back in his pocket, and carries on as if nothing happened.
