Why being a Vocal content creator can be like being an OnlyFans content creator

Does sex sell on both platforms?

Did you write that erotica? Wow!

Recently I had someone contact me in relation to one of my stories, after I had promoted it on Twitter. It was an erotic pregnant fiction story, not everyone’s cup of tea I know, but it’s a certain genre I’ve written to a little bit lately. They gave me some positive feedback on it, which for any author is one of the greatest things that can happen (I guess equal to being named a Pulitzer Prize winner, although not sure the last time pregnant erotica won that). I love hearing that my work can touch someone in a positive way, so we started chatting some more.

As it turned out, I was chatting with someone who was just starting out as a content creator on OnlyFans. First, they blew me away with how articulate they were, we talked about their love of writing poetry, and how they found the written word so much more exciting than photos. We then started to talk about how they go about building to be a top OnlyFans creator. It occurred to me, that there were some similarities between us, so I thought it would be great to share.

The intimacy

Across both platforms, we share something that is intensely personal and often only shared with those that are the closest to us. For me, it is my personal thoughts, wishes, fears and fantasies. For OF creators, it is often their body, in intimate poses, semi-dressed or naked.

It takes courage to put yourself out there in front of the world, it takes some level of confidence. There is that fear of “what if no-one likes this?” or worse “what if people say nasty things?” I have had both, there are some of my stories that I poured my heart into, and they have been read twice (and I know who that usually is because I have two very loyal supporters), and I’ve had direct feedback that something absolutely stunk. Yet here I am, standing naked in front you all again (figuratively not literally).

There is also the fear that some of the people you have hidden that side of your life from will find out. For some OF creators that might be their family or their kid’s friend’s family, for me it is some of the same people.

You learn what your market wants

I’ve written poetry, although I don’t consider myself a poet. I certainly don’t consider myself a good poet. Most of my poems have relatively low reads. But when I write a self-deprecating story about a time I self-diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, it’s a winner. I also found that my erotica can hit the mark, and part of what drove me to put my erotica out to the world was the feedback received from former lovers who spoke quite highly of it.

On OF, it can be even more challenging. Because there is a constant flood of new content, you need to keep your subscribers engaged and interested. You don’t want someone there for a month, you want them to renew a subscription for 3, 6 or 12 months. To do that you need to know what they like, and what they don’t. You need to understand and listen to your subscribers, and that can mean the content, how regularly you post, or how much “pay per view” content you have out there.

Both of us must create regularly, and often. I try to write something 2-3 times a week. On OF there can be an expectation that some posts daily or almost daily. Both can be challenging, imagine being 7 months pregnant and still having to get yourself ready to film something that will keep people wanting to see your pictures and videos.

Even Elle MacPherson has to promote her own products

It doesn’t matter how good a writer you are, or how amazing your body is, there are lots of other people out that are just as good at writing, and just as beautiful. To compete you need to promote.

I market my stories in a variety of Facebook or Instagram stories and Twitter feeds. The more people that see my stories out there, the more that are likely to click on it, read it, engage with it, and eventually I’ll get another few cents. I now try to promote at least one piece of writing a day, and that can be difficult.

The cut-throat world of OF means that it can be even more challenging. With the constant threat of subscribers dropping off after a month, you need to try to entice new ones to sign up. This means using what platforms you can to get people’s attention. Twitter is often the chosen medium because of its less stringent rules on nudity, but again that means getting regular content out to stay ahead of the algorithm. It means teaming up with other creators to support and hopefully share subscribers’ interests.

There are celebrities and big-name porn stars that have OF accounts, when you are competing with people that have professional production equipment it adds one more layer of challenges.

There is money to be made… but

I would love it if I was getting 100,000 reads per day, I could give up other work and just be a professional writer, but that’s not going to happen any time soon. I have received a total of $3 in tips, which is very much greatly appreciated, but again I’m not rushing out to order a Bentley or a Rolls.

I have, however, gained other non-tangible benefits. I’m more confident with my writing, I know what works and what doesn’t, and I know that I have it in me to write more and to draw on my inspiration where I find it. I’ve received very useful feedback on my writing, that will help me improve even more. It has even introduced me to some incredibly talented writers and other creators.

OnlyFans can deliver similar non-tangible benefits, including boosting your self-confidence and awakening your inner god/goddess. It is also seen as a way to deliver some financial freedom to people that are craving it. It is, however, important to remember that all the hard work listed above means that you need to commit to your OF work. Even if it’s to deliver short-term wins, remember that the internet is forever. One day in 15 years’ time, your son may come home upset because his friends showed him a video of his Mom stripping. That’s not to say that all the stigma that was attached to this work remains today but it’s still important to consider how you will react and deal with it if you must. But it’s no different to me explaining to my daughter in the future why I wrote about a pregnant woman having sex with a policeman or a guy she met at a grocery store.

Both Vocal and OnlyFans are intended to make a profit for their owners, that’s understandable. The creators contribute to that success, with different types of content but the underlying reasons are very similar.

You're talking my language now. I've only been on Vocal a few days. I'll see what I can get up.

I used to share my erotic stories on twitter, though I'm a bit put of by the new rule of marking sensitive content. My content hardly gets clicked on when I use this, and I am worried about not using it as the rules are confusing. However, I do find your article helpful, in terms of explaining using only fans; though it isn't something I would use myself.
