Voice Acting Advice: Reading NSFW Scripts

Trying out NSFW? Read this first.

In Voice Acting, there will be a lot of jobs over the course of your career. From audiobooks, to advertisements, and video narrations. To family cards and NSFW (Not Safe For Work/Wife) voice overs. It’s that last one that I’ll be going over today. The amount of cheap NSFW requests I get over the course of a year is unbelievable. This year alone I ended up with 13. I’m not usually a NSFW voice over, but I’ve dipped into it. I occasionally do some for a quick chuckle, and the $8 isn’t a bad bonus. Like I said, these people are CHEAP.

But despite the low pay, there is a big niche in the market for those that can stomach the NSFW community. I’ll say it again, you're going to need some guts. I will never be able to take back some things I’ve read with my poor eyes. I’m all for kinks and whatnot, but reading someones kink out loud, and being borderline abhorred, but still sounding trying your absolute best to sound sexy, is a feat in itself. All your personal tastes and morals have to be thrown out the window for some of these scripts. But if that's the case. Why do people read these? Well, money. Remember, that no matter how you might not like it, there are countless people out there that do. And that's great for them. But you're reading it for the money. So let focus on that. I usually end up only making $4 from these jarring scripts, occasionally a nice $8. But with a nicer market, I know porn and adult entertainment pay alot for quality voice overs. If that is something you are looking into, you could gather experience with the small fry before picking up those nice $50+ professional porn voice overs. I’ve been a porn voice over myself, although, that was not intentional. Maybe thats a story for another time.

So how to you stop blanching enough to sound sexy? Pretend its something you’re really into. Read the script like its made for you. Ignore the things that make your toes curl, and focus on what makes you ‘steamy’. It’ll be hard at first, but what part of voice acting isn’t? The more you read these kinds of scripts the better you’ll get. And the more you could potentially make. If your lucky, you might end up reading about something you really are into, and that could be your niche. The possibilities of the NSFW community is endless.

Take a mental break if you need to. Some of these scripts can be a lot to handle. They can get dark, or just really strange. The best thing you can do is sit down and decide if you are able to or want to finish the script, WITHOUT it hurting you. Reading something that makes you so uncomfortable or depressed that it affects you mentally, means you need to step back and denied the request. Mental scars last longer than money. And no money is worth mental scars. The line between disgust and mental harm is a very thin one, so before anyone out there decides they want to try NSFW, plan out and think about how far is too far. Make sure to list this in your gig or job description so people dont contact you with things that cross this line.

It’s up to you if you’d like to share or hide this part of your work, but if you hide it, make sure to have at least one person you can talk to about it for advice. It’s hard to be alone in something like this and could take a mental toll. Confide in that person about it every so often to make sure they understand what work pressures you are facing.

Don’t worry if it ends up not being for you. Don’t feel ashamed for not being able to record or work with NSFW scripts, its not for everyone. And if you do end up working solely in NSFW, then congratulations! Theres a weird niche I’m sure you’re ready to fill. Good luck!
