Chapter 4: Frostbound Vows

He moved inside her with a rhythm that felt like the mountain’s own heartbeat. Slow. Deep. Unhurried, as though he wanted to memorize every angle of her, every sound she made.

Astraea’s fingers traced down his chest, feeling the cool smoothness of his skin beneath her palms. The frost flowers continued their silent expansion around them, crawling up the blades of grass, reaching toward the treeline.

But she wanted more.

She shifted beneath him, and his rhythm faltered.

“What—”

“Move with me.”

Her hands found his shoulders, pushing gently. He understood immediately, withdrawing from her with a reluctance that showed in the tightening of his jaw. She rolled, pulling him with her until she was above him, straddling his hips.

The cold air kissed her skin, raising goosebumps across her breasts. The frost beneath her palms crackled softly, spreading in crystalline patterns wherever she touched.

Aleric lay beneath her, his silver hair fanned across the frozen grass, his chest rising and falling with quickened breath. His hands found her thighs, thumbs tracing slow circles against her skin.

“Like this,” he murmured, more statement than question.

Astraea smiled down at him. “I want to see you.”

His gaze traveled over her—the curve of her breasts, the dip of her waist, the way the moonlight pooled in the hollow of her throat. His fingers tightened on her thighs.

“Then see me.”

She reached between them, guiding him back to her entrance. The head of him pressed against her slick folds, and she held there for a moment, watching his face.

His eyes were dark. His lips parted slightly.

She lowered herself.

The sensation of him filling her from this angle was different. Deeper. She felt him reach places that made her breath stutter, made her grip his chest for support. His hands slid up her thighs, settling on her hips, steadying her.

“Astraea.” Her name was a rough exhale.

She began to move.

Slow circles at first, testing the rhythm, feeling him inside her with every subtle shift. His thumbs pressed into the curve of her hip bones, guiding her, but he let her set the pace.

Above them, the stars seemed to pulse.

Astraea lifted herself until only the tip of him remained inside her, then sank back down with a deliberate slowness that drew a low groan from his throat. His head tilted back, exposing the column of his throat, and she watched the frost climb higher along his skin.

She did it again.

And again.

Each descent brought a sharper gasp, a tighter grip on her hips. His control was fracturing, she could feel it in the way his fingers dug into her flesh, in the ragged edge of his breathing.

“You’re—” He stopped, swallowed. “You’re magnificent.”

She leaned forward, letting her breasts brush his chest, letting her hair fall around them like a curtain. “Show me.”

His hips bucked upward, driving deeper into her, and a cry escaped her lips. The frost beneath them surged, climbing her knees, spreading up her thighs in delicate silver veins.

He did it again.

Her rhythm broke. She began to move faster, riding him with a hunger that surprised her, that made her forget the cold, the stars, the mountain itself. There was only him inside her, his hands on her hips, his eyes watching her fall apart.

His thumb found her clit.

The pressure was light, almost teasing, but it sent a jolt through her that made her falter. He pressed harder, circling in time with her movements, and she felt the familiar tension coiling in her core.

“I’m close,” she breathed.

“Let go.” His voice was strained. “Let go, Astraea.”

She shook her head, a desperate sound escaping her. “I want to feel you.”

His eyes widened. Understanding flickered across his face, followed by something rawer.

His hands tightened on her hips, and he began to thrust up into her, matching her rhythm, driving deeper with each motion. The sounds that filled the clearing were hers—sharp, broken, unguarded.

The frost flowers erupted around them, climbing the trees, encasing the branches in silver light. The temperature dropped sharply, and she felt the cold bite at her skin, but she didn’t care.

She was close. So close.

His thumb circled her clit with precision, and she felt herself teetering on the edge, suspended in that breathless moment before release.

“Look at me,” he commanded.

She did.

His eyes were wild, his hair tangled with frost, his chest heaving beneath her. He looked like a god of winter, and he was looking at her like she was the only source of warmth in his frozen world.

“Come for me,” he whispered. “Let me feel you.”

Her body obeyed before her mind could catch up.

The release tore through her, wrenching a cry from her throat that echoed across the clearing. Her inner walls clenched around him, pulsing, drawing him deeper as wave after wave of pleasure crashed through her.

His response was immediate.

His hips bucked upward, once, twice, and she felt him spill inside her—hot and unexpected against the cool of his skin. A guttural sound escaped him, his hands gripping her hips so tightly she knew there would be marks.

They stayed like that, frozen, as the aftershocks rippled through them.

The frost flowers continued to bloom, covering the entire clearing in a blanket of silver and ice. The stars above seemed brighter, closer, as though they had descended to witness the moment.

Astraea collapsed against his chest, her cheek resting over his pounding heart. His arms wrapped around her, pulling her close, burying his face in her hair.

Neither spoke.

The wind whispered through the trees, carrying the scent of pine and frost. The mountain settled around them, content.

His hand traced lazy patterns on her back, and she felt the tension slowly drain from his body.

“You asked me what I wanted from the stars,” she murmured against his skin.

His chest rumbled with a quiet sound. “And?”

She lifted her head, meeting his gaze. The silver of his eyes was soft now, warm despite the winter surrounding them.

“This.”

He smiled, and it transformed his face entirely. “Good.”

She kissed him, slow and deep, tasting herself on his lips, tasting the frost that clung to his skin. When she pulled back, she saw the frost flowers retreating slightly, as though giving them space.

“We should stay here,” she said.

“Forever?”

“For tonight.”

His arms tightened around her, drawing her closer against the steady rhythm of his heart. The frost flowers continued their slow retreat, receding from the edges of the clearing as though giving them privacy. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head, his lips lingering there.

"Tonight is enough."

The words settled between them like a promise. Astraea felt them resonate through her chest, through the dragon that stirred contentedly beneath her skin. She shifted against him, feeling the cool grass beneath her back, the warmth of his body pressed along her length.

"Just tonight?" she asked, her voice softer than she intended.

His hand found hers, fingers interlacing. "Tonight is what we have. I won't ask for more than that."

She turned her head, looking up at him. The moonlight caught his features, softening the sharp edges of his jaw, the silver of his eyes. He looked almost vulnerable in that moment, as though he had given her something fragile and hoped she wouldn't break it.

"And if I want to give you more?"

His breath caught. She felt it against her forehead, felt the way his chest stilled beneath her cheek.

"Then I would be a fool to refuse."

She smiled, tracing a pattern across his collarbone with her fingertip. The frost beneath her touch bloomed briefly before fading, responding to her mood. "Good. Because I'm not finished with you yet."

His laugh was low and warm, vibrating through her. His hand came up to cup her cheek, tilting her face toward his. "What did the stars tell you, Astraea?"

"That you were waiting."

"Anything else?"

She met his gaze, unflinching. "That I should trust you."

"And do you?"

Instead of answering, she kissed him. It was slow, searching, as though she were tasting the truth of his question. When she pulled back, her eyes were bright.

"I'm here, aren't I?"
