The Winter Clearing
Chapter 2: The Icebound Embrace & Chapter 3: The Mountain's Awakening

Chapter 2: The Icebound Embrace
The kiss deepened, and the cold seemed to fall away from her skin. Astraea’s fingers tightened in the wool of his coat, pulling him closer as his mouth moved against hers with a hunger that belied his earlier restraint. His cool hand slid from her waist, tracing up her spine until it settled between her shoulder blades, pressing her firmly against the solid warmth of his chest.
The contrast made her shiver.
She broke the kiss just long enough to breathe, her forehead resting against his. “You’re very good at that.”
“Years of practice,” he murmured, though his voice held a note of breathlessness that suggested otherwise.
“Liar.”
He smiled, and she felt it against her lips. “Perhaps. Or perhaps I’m simply inspired.”
Her laugh was soft, almost swallowed by the night. Then his mouth found the corner of her jaw, trailing downward with a deliberation that made her pulse skip. His lips brushed the sensitive skin just below her ear, and her breath caught.
“Aleric.”
“Mm?”
“What are you doing?”
His answer came against her throat, the words vibrating through her. “Finally doing what I’ve imagined for longer than I care to admit.”
She tilted her head, giving him more access. His mouth traced lower, along the column of her neck, tasting her skin with a reverence that made her chest ache. His cool fingers found the clasp of her cloak, and he paused.
“May I?”
The question was quiet, deliberate. His silver eyes found hers in the moonlight, and she saw the hunger there—carefully leashed, waiting for her answer.
“Yes.”
The clasp gave way with a soft click, and the heavy wool slipped from her shoulders, pooling in the frost-kissed grass. The night air touched her arms, raising goosebumps across her skin, but his gaze was warmer than any fire.
His eyes traveled over her, taking in the simple linen dress beneath, the way the moonlight caught the curve of her hips. A low sound escaped him.
“You’re beautiful.”
Astraea felt heat rise to her cheeks. She was used to attention
Chapter 3: The Mountain's Awakening
The linen slipped from Astraea’s shoulders a moment later, and she let it fall without ceremony. The frost-kissed grass brushed her bare ankles as she stood before him, moonlight painting her skin in silver and shadow.
His gaze moved over her slowly. Deliberately. He took in the soft curve of her breasts, the narrow dip of her waist, the way the night air made her skin pebble and tighten.
“You’re staring,” she murmured.
“I’m memorizing.”
She should have felt exposed. Instead, his attention felt like a gift wrapping around her, warming her more than any fire.
His coat joined her dress, a dark heap on the frost. Beneath it, his shirt hung open at the collar, revealing the lean lines of his chest. She reached out, tracing the edge of fabric with her fingertips before pushing it from his shoulders.
Cool skin under her palms.
Hard muscle over sharp bone.
The winter dragon stood before her, formed like a man, watching her with eyes that held more heat than any summer sun.
“Have you imagined this?” she asked, her voice softer than she intended.
“Every night.” His hand lifted, fingers brushing the underside of her breast. “But you’re more than I imagined.”
She let him touch her. His thumb circled the rise of her flesh, slow and light, and her lips parted with a quiet breath. He was studying her reaction with an intensity that made her feel precious.
“May I kiss you?” His voice had dropped to a whisper.
Astraea answered by closing the distance.
Their mouths met without hesitation. His lips were cool against hers, but the kiss burned. His fingers slid beneath her breast, lifting it, and she melted into the warmth of his touch.
They sank down together, gently, into the frost-lined grass.
The cold sparked along her bare back, a sharp contrast to the heat pooling low in her belly. He cradled her, shielding her from the chill with his body as his mouth traced a path down her throat. Lower. Across her collarbone with small, reverent kisses.
His lips reached her breast, and she gasped.
He took her gently at first, a grazing of teeth over the peak. She arched into him, her fingers threading through his pale hair, and he moaned against her skin. His cool tongue circled her nipple—once, twice—until her back bowed and a shuddering sound escaped her.
“You taste like starlight,” he murmured against her skin.
“That’s ridiculous.”
His smile pressed into her. She felt teeth graze the sensitive peak, and her protest dissolved.
He moved to her other breast, giving it the same attention, and she let her head fall back against the grass. Above them, the stars watched. His hand swept down her stomach, fingers splaying across her hip.
The texture of his touch was patient. Searching.
Then his fingers skimmed lower.
Between her thighs, where she was already slick for him, and he made a low sound against her breast.
“You’re ready for me.”
Her cheeks warmed, but she didn’t look away. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
His eyes snapped to hers. Something unspoken passed between them—a recognition of shared longing.
He found the slick seam of her and parted it gently, the cool pad of his finger sliding through her heat. Astraea’s hips bucked involuntarily.
“Does that feel—” may I?”
“Yes,” she breathed. “Please.”
His finger circled her slowly, the coolness of his skin against the heat of hers making her head spin. Her hand found his shoulder, fingers digging into smooth flesh as he explored. He found her most sensitive spot with unnerving accuracy, drawing a broken moan past her lips.
“This one.”
She could only nod.
He kept his pace unhurried. His finger dipped lower, pressing against her entrance, sliding into her with one seamless motion.
Astraea’s breath shattered.
Something glimmered between them.
She opened her eyes to find the frost beneath her suddenly blooming with tiny crystals, turning the grass into a field of silver flowers that grew wherever her fingers trailed. She watched the frost climb his arm where it pressed against her hip, tracing his skin in delicate patterns.
His eyes were dark, watching the effect she had on this place.
“Your magic,” she whispered.
“Responding to yours.”
Higher. Deeper.
His finger curled inside her, and the world condensed.
She felt the mountain itself shudder, felt the snow respond to them. The temperature dropped sharply in the space around them, her breath forging clouds, but she couldn’t bring herself to care. His mouth returned to her breast, the cool drawing of his tongue against the sensitive peak sending pleasure deep into her core.
Two fingers now. His thumb pressed against her clit in a light, steady circle.
“Astraea.” Her name was a prayer against her skin. “I want to taste you.”
The words stripped her.
She nodded, her mouth parting on a soft sound as he slid his fingers free. His mouth left a trail down her stomach, lower still, and she felt the cold of his breath against the heat of her before his tongue touched her.
A whirlwind engulfed her.
His fingers spread her folds, exposed her completely, and his mouth closed over her. His tongue was cool silk against the aching heat of her, methodical in its worship. Each stroke drew a shiver from her frame.
A sound tore from her throat—low, desperate, unbidden. He flattened his tongue against her and licked slowly, from the entrance of her to the swollen bud of her clit, circling it with a delicacy that made her thighs tremble against his ears.
The frost flowers were spreading across the clearing, surrounding them in a ring of ice and silver light.
He hummed against her, the vibration shooting through her with devastating precision. Her hand found his hair, anchors itself there, but her grip was gentle and pleading.
“Please,” she whimpered. She wasn’t sure what she was asking for, only that she couldn’t bear for him to stop.
He didn’t.
His mouth worked her slowly, drawing out every gasp, every shudder. Her hips began to move against him, rolling in small circles as his tongue delved and retreated, found and withdrew until she was chasing him with breathless need.
The release rose like a tide, unstoppable, vast.
When it came, there was no warning.
One moment she was balanced on the edge, suspended above the precipice; the next, she was falling, clutching his hair, crying out his name as waves of pleasure tore through her.
He didn’t stop. He licked her through every tremor until the last wave faded.
When she finally opened her eyes, Aleric was above her again.
His pale hair was scattered with frost, and there was snow on his shoulders. His mouth was slick with her, and his eyes held a kind of reverence that stole her breath.
“You’re still cold,” she murmured, dazed.
“I’m still cold,” he agreed.
“Come here.”
He moved over her. The length of him settled against the heat of her thigh, heavy, aching, deliberate. She felt him there, confined by his breeches, wanting release.
Astraea’s fingers found the laces.
He caught her wrist—gentle, shaking. His forehead pressed against hers.
“Once I’m inside you,” he rasped, “there will be no stopping.”
She looked up at him. At the ice forming in his hair, the winter creeping back across his skin. The control he displayed was cracking, and the hunger beneath it made her heart surge.
“Why would you want to?”
His laugh was broken. “Astraea.”
“Yes.”
Her fingers pulled at the laces, and she felt him shudder against her. The first brush of his bare flesh against her hip was a revelation—that contrast between cool skin and what she could already feel rising from him.
He pushed himself up just enough to strip his breeches away. Her breath caught at the sight of him, long and thick, heavy with anticipation.
He settled between her legs.
The head of him pressed against the entrance of her, wet from his mouth, waiting.
“May I?” His hands cupped her face. His eyes held hers, steady and clear amid all the winter storm tearing around them. “If I have you, I will never want another. This will be the greatest truth of me.”
Astraea reached up, pulled him down.
She kissed him, tasting herself on his lips.
“Make me yours,” she breathed, “and let the stars bear witness.”
He entered her slowly—so slowly.
Inch by agonizing inch.
The fullness of him stretched her, filled her. She gasped as he seated himself inside her completely, her fingers digging crescents into his shoulders, feeling him through every shudder.
Pure heat met pure cold.
Their gazes intertwined.
Then he began to move.
The mountain flexed beneath her back, and the frost flowers bloomed into full glory around them, wild and shimmering, casting a rib cage of crystal up toward the heavens. Entire span of the forest awoke, swallowing them into its icy depths.
