The Winter Clearing
Chapter 1: The Stars Have Led Me Here

Chapter 1: The Stars Have Led Me Here
The stars had been calling Astraea all evening, pulling her attention toward the southern mountains with a persistence she couldn't quite ignore. One constellation in particular seemed brighter than the rest, its silver points arranged in a pattern that stirred something ancient beneath her human thoughts.
Her dragon wanted her to follow.
So she did.
She left the warmth of her crystal home and wandered higher into the mountains, her cloak gathered around her against the growing chill. The village disappeared behind the trees until there was nothing left but moonlight, snow, and the distant whisper of wind through the pines.
Then the forest opened.
Astraea stepped into a clearing she'd never seen before.
Frost covered the surrounding trees, turning their branches into silver lace. Icicles glittered overhead, catching the moonlight and scattering it across the snow. Yet the center remained untouched, a perfect circle of pale grass beneath the stars.
She moved slowly through it, fascinated.
There was something unusual about the place. Her dragon seemed perfectly content here, absorbing the cold as though it were an old familiar scent.
Astraea ran her fingers across a frost-covered branch.
A delicate ice flower formed beneath her touch.
"Oh, that's lovely."
She leaned closer.
The flower vanished.
Astraea stared at the empty branch.
"Well. That was unnecessarily dramatic."
A quiet laugh came from behind her.
"It doesn't like being touched."
She turned.
Aleric Fay stood beneath the trees.
His pale hair caught the moonlight, silver-gold against the dark forest, with a dusting of frost scattered through it. He looked entirely at home in the frozen landscape, as though the clearing had been waiting for him to return.
Astraea took him in for a moment before meeting his eyes.
"So you're the culprit."
"The culprit?"
"The person responsible for the dramatic scenery."
A small smile touched his lips.
"Perhaps."
"I knew it."
She turned back toward the clearing.
"I was beginning to think the stars had brought me all this way just to admire your landscaping."
"I wouldn't complain."
"Of course you wouldn't."
She glanced over her shoulder.
Aleric was still watching her.
Not the clearing.
Her.
Astraea smiled.
"You've been watching me."
"I've noticed you."
"That's a very careful way of putting it."
"I'm trying not to frighten you away."
That answer caught her off guard.
She turned fully toward him.
"You expected me?"
"I hoped you'd come."
"Why?"
He walked into the clearing, his boots crunching softly against the frost.
"Because I've seen you looking toward these mountains."
Astraea studied him.
"And you thought I'd eventually follow?"
"I thought the stars would eventually convince you."
Her expression softened.
"You noticed that too."
"I notice a lot about you."
There was enough warmth in his voice to make the words feel far more intimate than they should have.
Astraea walked toward him.
"So I've gathered."
He stopped several feet away.
She kept coming.
"You're very confident for someone who admits he's been waiting for me."
"I'm less confident than I appear."
"Really?"
"You're making it difficult."
Astraea smiled.
"Good."
She stopped in front of him.
The difference in their magic was strange. His carried the crisp stillness of winter, while hers seemed to hum with the warmth and radiance of distant stars.
Instead of clashing, the two sensations seemed to settle comfortably around one another.
Aleric lifted his hand.
He hesitated before brushing a strand of her hair away from her face.
Astraea didn't move.
His fingertips lingered near her temple.
"You can ask," she murmured.
"May I?"
"Now you ask?"
"I learn quickly."
She laughed under her breath.
"Yes."
His fingers traced lightly along her cheek before settling beneath her chin.
The gesture was gentle enough to be respectful, but his attention made it difficult to pretend it meant nothing.
Astraea's gaze drifted over his face.
"You have very cold hands."
"Occupational hazard."
"And yet..."
She reached for his wrist.
"...you don't seem particularly cold."
His smile deepened.
"Neither do you."
Her fingers remained around his wrist.
His pulse beat steadily beneath them.
She looked down at their hands.
Then back at him.
"I thought you said you weren't confident."
"I said I was less confident than I appear."
"There's a difference?"
"A significant one."
His other hand settled against her waist.
Astraea's breath caught softly.
His touch was unhurried, almost as though he were giving her time to decide whether she wanted him there.
She placed her palm against his chest instead.
His heartbeat was steady beneath her hand.
"You're enjoying this," she said.
"Very much."
"At least you're honest."
"With you, I'm trying to be."
Her fingers curled slightly into his coat.
"That's dangerous."
"I thought you liked dangerous."
"I like interesting."
"What's the difference?"
She looked up at him.
"I haven't decided yet."
He smiled.
"Take your time."
She didn't.
Astraea reached up and straightened the collar of his coat, though it didn't need straightening. Her fingertips brushed the side of his neck before lingering there.
His expression changed.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
Astraea noticed.
"Interesting."
"What?"
"You've been very composed."
"And?"
"I'm starting to wonder what it takes to make you lose that composure."
His eyes held hers.
"You may already be doing it."
The answer sent a warm thrill through her.
She stepped closer.
Their bodies brushed lightly.
Neither moved away.
Aleric lowered his head until his voice was little more than a murmur.
"Still think the stars brought you here to admire my landscaping?"
Astraea smiled.
"I think they may have had something else in mind."
"Should I be jealous?"
"Of the stars?"
"Perhaps."
She laughed.
"That's ridiculous."
"I've been waiting for you. I think I've earned a little jealousy."
Her expression softened.
"You really have been waiting."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you come find me?"
His thumb moved gently against her waist.
"Because I wanted you to come willingly."
That answer quieted her.
There was no manipulation in his voice.
No hidden threat.
Only honesty.
Astraea looked toward the stars for a moment before returning her attention to him.
"I came willingly."
"I know."
"How?"
His gaze dropped to the hand she still had curled in his coat.
"Because you haven't let go."
Astraea looked down.
She hadn't.
Instead of releasing him, she pulled him closer.
"Perhaps I'm enjoying the view."
Aleric smiled.
"Perhaps I am too."
Their lips met.
The first kiss was slow, almost tentative, but the restraint didn't last. Astraea's fingers tightened in his coat as she leaned into him, and his arm drew her comfortably against him.
When they separated, they remained close enough that their noses nearly touched.
Astraea smiled.
"You know, for someone who lives in a frozen clearing, you're surprisingly warm."
"And for someone who claims to be difficult to impress, you're remarkably easy to distract."
She laughed.
"Don't get cocky."
"Too late."
She kissed him again before he could say anything else.
This time there was no uncertainty.
Only the quiet intimacy of two people discovering that neither was particularly interested in maintaining the distance they'd started with.
Above them, the stars continued their silent conversation.
Astraea barely noticed.
For tonight, she had followed them far enough.
And if the stars had brought her here for a reason, she suspected she had just found it.
