Playboy TV

In this age of free online porn, great to see they’re still kickin’ it

The first 'porn' my wife and I watched together was a Playboy Channel show called Sexy Urban Legends. It was on in the 90s. It was very softcore but really well done. The premise was two buddies in a bar, telling each other stories about urban legends, but with a sexy twist. So, for example, a sexy woman who lures men back to her apartment to have sex… and then steals their kidney. Or a hotel owner who seduces her male clients.. but it turns out she's been dead for 100 years. Of course, the plotlines are a bit/lot cheesy, but the show was well acted, well shot, and had super attractive actors. It was the perfect soft porn experience for our newbie sexual adventure.

For years, we would watch movies or other shows they did. The quality was pretty good, and the softer edge... we liked. For example, a show called "Swing" took place in a mansion in LA where 12 swingers lived. Each episode, a new couple would come to the swinger house and see how they liked being in that new sexy environment. A professional sex therapist hosted and guided them through the journey. It was a great introduction to the swinging lifestyle.

Another favorite - Sexcetera- did 10–15 minute mini-documentaries of all things sexual — a visit to a Dom, an interview with an erotic writer… pretty much any kink you could imagine. The hosts were funny and quirky and immersed themselves into these experiences so you could get a sense of what it would be like. I'll never forget a segment on a 'sex island,' where wealthy male guests arrived on a tropical island and were paired with an escort for the duration of their vacation.

They had another show — Sex Court. Think Night Court (remember the one with John Laroquette) or Judge Judy.. but with sex. Plaintiffs would have sexual complaints - like, my wife won't go down on me - and the judge and her sexy bailiff would adjudicate. The judge - a sex dom-type- was kind of excellent.

And then came PornHub. All the free porn you could ever dream of. To be honest, I've never loved hard-core porn. I've watched it on occasion, but I prefer my erotica a little softer and with a little more production value. So PornHub wasn't for me. But I'm clearly in the minority. When PornHub and online porn came along, the entire erotica industry was swallowed. Magazines disappeared, and video rentals and sales plummeted. As did, of course, those who made them.

So, imagine how happy I was a few weeks ago when I read an article recently that mentioned that Playboy TV was still around. I immediately hopped on their website. The lifetime membership I bought — in a bout of youthful enthusiasm — was still, thankfully, working. So, my wife and I started to browse.

I won't pretend it lives up to its past glory days. Original content seems a thing of the past — no more playboy TV new shows or movies. But they still have a few of their old classics up, which was nice to see. They have some new shows — but they are made by others and are all of the short, sexy, non-plot-driven variety. There are some sexy scenes for sure, but lacking the acting and scripts that I kind of like. They also curate some sexy movies from, I believe, some European production houses. It's a little harder core, but not extreme. And it's definitely better made than your average PornHub video.

All-in-all, I would say kudos to Playboy TV for keeping things going in a very competitive market. While we'll probably never be regulars again, it can still be a nice distraction on a Wednesday night with a glass of wine.
