Chapter 15

Confrontation

Nancy came home to find Billy sitting on her porch, anxiously waiting her arrival.

“Hey, Nancy!” Billy stood up from his place on the steps and hurried over to meet her.

“I haven’t heard from you in almost two days. I was getting worried that you may never get better.”

Billy kissed her on the lips and pulled out something from his Letterman jacket.

“Look, yellow and white daffodils. Your favorite!” He handed them to her and she smiled slightly. Outside she looked accepting, but inside she was anything but. Inside, her stomach twisted and ached and cried out for justice. Anger rose up as well. Anger and hurt. Her mind was in the worst situation, however,. It kept replaying that night over and over again. Finally, she couldn’t help it anymore. She started crying, and though she desperately tryed to hold it in, it still was able to find its way out, which made Billy look at her in concern.

“Something wrong, babe?” Billy took a gentle hold of Nancy’s chin and directed her gaze upwards towards him. He could see that she was now crying steadily. She still couldn’t answer him. Nancy opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Something suddenly flashed through her mind. She remembered her book’s Charles Turner. What would he do in this situation? How would he handle this? He may consider that he needed to protect himself. He didn’t just rush out of the door. He covered his tracks and was going to in the future. With the last place that Nancy left off, he wasn’t out of the woods. But he was working towards it. He needed to do what was right for his survival and Nancy needed to do what was right for her heart.

“Billy, no.” She pushed herself free of his embrace. He looked at her, puzzled.

“Huh?” She looked to the ground and took a deep breath. Now her mind was occupied not just with what she had witnessed the night of the party, but also the fun she had had with Beth and Janet, what great friends and support that had been, and what still needed to be done. She had found her way out. Her heart would be cracked, but not broken, and definitely not smashed beyond repair.

“Billy, I saw you and Allie the other night at the party. I saw what you did.”

Billy stammered and shook his head.

“I don’t know what you mean? Allie and me?”

“Yes, upstairs in the bedroom.”

Billy shook his head once more and let out a chuckle.

“Babe, I couldn’t have been upstairs. Allie kept everyone downstairs. That was the only way we could have it there.”

“Others saw you upstairs too. And I heard her voice call out your name. I recognize the sound of her voice.” Nancy was starting to get angry. Billy stammered some more and he broke eye contact with her the way a nervous person would.

“I heard you, too.”

“I’m sorry, Nancy, but I would never do that to you in a million years.”

Nancy knew he was lying, she had been with him for almost two years and knew his little habits. The fact that he was untrue to her was one thing, but lying about it was just insult to injury.

“Please, Billy, just go.”

“No, babe, I’m gonna stay here until you believe me.”

Nancy screamed at him.

“Go! We’re through!” Billy just stood there.

The front door opened and Nancy’s father looked over at the two.

“Everything okay here? What’s going on?”

Nancy ran up and wrapped her arms around her father.

“Billy cheated on me!” Tears gushed out from under Nancy’s eyes.

Her father’s face grew stern and red. And it was looking square at Billy.

“If you ever come here to bother my little girl again or bother her in any other manner, you’ll be meeting my Colt .45. Do you understand?” His voice shook with anger.

“Ya, ya, yes, sir,” Billy replied and scurried off down the street.

Nancy’s father put his arm around his daughter, kissed her soaked cheek and led her inside, closing the door behind them.
