"Guess what?" Edith stood before her parents, trying to seem estatic. Her parents looked at her, wondering what this excitment was all about. "What?" her mother asked, trying to discern what this situation was about this time. "I'm getting married. You know Augustine propose last night." Edith flicked her long blond hair over her shoulder, trying to seem joyful. "That is so wonderful. Finally out eldest daughter has found herself a husband!" said her father. Her mother looked at her sadly. Edith knew what was going through her mother's mind.

Edith's grandfather, Howard, expected her mother to marry a suitable man from within the family. When her mother rebeled and married her father instead he disowned her. Before he died he had her mother taken out of his will. Edith wanted her mother to at least see she was happy, even if she wasn't. Edith smiledat her mother and her mother smiled back.

Edith's father was trying to get his beloved daughter to marry within the family as well. Augustine Black, who was her third cousin, was one of the only men within the family that agreed to marry Edith. Edith didn't want to be married to Augustine but she knew her father wasn't going to allow her to wed her choice for a husband. The reason wasn't money matters or a dowery. The reason wasn't because he wasn't related by blood. The reason was because he was a pirate.

Edward Matthews was the love of Edith's life. Edith ,met him when she was sixteen. She loved him at that very moment. Edward seemed to have the same feelings for her. She always believed in chasity and refused to have intercourse with Edward due to the very fact that they were not married. He accepted this, telling her that intercourse was not all that was on hs mind. Although he would spend their nights just holding her, they never had any ecual relations.

Edith looked at her parents and signed, trying to seem relieved that she had found herself a husband. Inside she felt miserable. Her mother seemed to notice. "I'll go wash up for lunch." Edith said as she walked to the dorr to the kitchen. Se walked to the sink to wash her hands. She spun around the moment her mother walked in. "Honey, I know you don't want to marry Ausgustine. I know your feelings are still set on Edward. I don't want this marriage to cause more stress than you have already been through. Our choices are never easy but you do have options." her mother touched her shoulder. Edith smiled, the tears forming behind her eyes. She had to just mention Edward, Edith thought.

She felt a familiar stab os sadness. She let the tears fall down her cheeks. Her mother looked at her with concern. She tried to look at her mother but couldn't. "I miss Edward so much." Edith said, hanging her head. Her mother put her arms around her. "I know, baby. Give it some time and things will turn out in your favor. Even if ou and Edward never marry at least you know you did something for love. He may be dangerous but at least her cared for you." Edith smiled and lay her head on her moher's shoulder. Edith washed her hands and walked into the kitvchen where her father sat at the table with the newspaper.

"How long until..." his voice trailed off when her saw his daughter's tear streaked face. "What's wrong?" he asked. Edith looked at her mother. Her mother sat down next to Edith's father. "Edward. She wants...." Her father slammed the newspaper onto the table. "No! Not again. I won't have a theif as part of this family." Edith leaped to her feet. "But father, he is good, honest,a nd very loving. You could..." Her father stared at her angerly. "I said no! There is no reason for you to marry him or even see him again."

Edith let the tears fall down her cheeks. She turned and ran to her room, refusing to look behind her. She closed the door to her room and wiped away her tears, trying to calm down. She will be with Edward whether her father agreed or not. She was sure of it.
