Written All Over Her Face
A Micro Heist
Isabel left the room for just a minute to grab the laundry. Glancing at the table and then at her two-year-old upon returning, she immediately knew she messed up.
“Amy, did you eat Mommy’s chocolate?” Isabel asked the two-year-old culprit with proof of the heist all over her face.
“Nooo, I not eat that,” the sweet little voice replied with feigned confusion.
Isabel carried the little thief into the bathroom and placed her in front of the mirror. “What’s on your face then Ma’am?”
“I don’t know,” the toddler responded as she smiled at her reflection and happily licked the chocolate off the finger that had just traced a line across her chocolate smeared cheek.
“If you didn’t eat the chocolate, who did?”
“Mamew did Mommy, promise,” dramatic sincerity oozing out of the tiny con artist as she blamed her 8-month-old brother Matthew.
“But he doesn’t have chocolate on his face, you do,” Isabel said barely able to maintain her composure.
“I not eat it,” the final protest before her sentencing.
With the convicted felon now in her timeout chair for lying, Isabel wondered how she would ever make it through motherhood with a straight face.

I have internally decided that I am a writer. Since that decision was made, the voice in my head has changed. It’s become louder as it begs to be released.
